Wax Idols Announce Tour Dates With Thursday

Watch: "Deborah" video at Noisey or YouTube

“It lives in a grim, melodic sweet spot between total bummer and feel-good sing-a-long, with a hook that sounds better suited for fits-pumping post-trauma than wallowing in the thick of it.” - The Fader

“Despite the conscientious production and silvery veneer of American Tragic, the record at hand is raw and incredibly open, not unlike Fortune herself.” - Noisey

"While the sound of the band (mostly Fortune herself) is polished, like a black pearl, Fortune’s lyrics are often raw, and the emotions seem pretty close to the surface." - John Schaefer, WNYC

"Post-punk prodigies" - SPIN
Wax Idols have announced North American tour dates with the recently-reunited Thursday, a strong and vital pairing of groups both known for their unparalleled live performances and unique personal voices. Those voices are raised together in the current political climate, with two ultimatums: dethrone them all, and provide care and compassion for those who need it most. The upcoming tour will kick off on March 28 in Boston at House Of Blues and will make stops in major cities such as Philadelphia, Atlanta, Los Angeles and includeds a Wax Idols headlining show at Brooklyn Bazaar. The dates with Thursday will also include performances by Touché Amoré and Basement.

About the tour, Wax Idols' Hether Fourtune says:

I started going to punk/hardcore shows when I was around 13. I saw Thursday every time they played within a 200 mile radius of my rural home in Michigan for years. My consistent & devoted presence at their shows made an impact I guess, because when I reached out to Geoff years later as an adult he remembered me. We formed a friendship & he in turn became a fan of this band. Geoff and I have a uniquely powerful bond that has seen us both through many seasons of life. I feel truly honored to know him and to have the opportunity to play to Thursday audiences — the very same audience I grew up in.
Wax Idols’ critically-acclaimed album, American Tragic, is reissued digitally and will be released on March 10 with limited edition alternate cover on purple cassette via the band’s label Etruscan Gold Records. The reissue, which can be pre-ordered at Bandcamp includes an exclusive remix of "Deborah" from the band’s own Peter Lightning.

Today Noisey has an exclusive premiere of the official video for "Deborah" from American TragicThe video was filmed in Oakland and Los Angeles produced by Omar Acosta (Stretch and Bobbito) who says, "It was great working with Hether and the rest of band. A true storyteller, each of her pieces have power behind them with a deep narrative you can feel within your soul. We wanted to stay away from the traditional glossy music video opting instead to captivate the energy at actual shows. it appears as if viewed through the eyes of a roadie or a stage-hand. The single, 'Deborah,' is real with meaning and story that is featured throughout the tour setting a foundation for more to come."

Wax Idols are a four-piece based out of Oakland, CA; their sound calls on the mutated aesthetics of varying strains of post-punk (songwriting elements from darkwave and Factory/Rough Trade pioneers, as well as the complex interplay and emotion of post-hardcore), without carbon-copying those who made these maps. Hether Fortune's powerful voice as the songwriter, arranger, producer singer and guitarist is at the center, but this makes no other member of the band a replaceable element. Their work together is what makes Wax Idols' energy these days so vital.

The band’s recent single, “Everybody Gets What They Want,” is taken from their forthcoming (and fourth) album Happy Ending, set to be released later this year. Happy Ending is a concept album exploring the posthumous consciousness of a fictional protagonist who can still fully perceive the world around herself. “In a grave, just for you,” Fortune sings with a certain slyness, exploring the abstraction & finality of death from both philosophical and personal perspectives. She also sees this album as a way to process increasing anxieties & fear within the current sociopolitical landscape. This dual theme of political anxiety and personal experience is one Fortune began exploring in seriousness on Wax Idols’ critically-acclaimed third album, American Tragic, which Pitchfork proclaimed “smartly unpacks a pretty universal experience—the sadness, nostalgia, and occasional euphoria involved in letting go of something you once cared about, even when it desperately hurts.”

Mega Bog, the experimental pop project of Brooklyn's Erin Birgy, will release the weird and wonderful new album Happy Together this week on Nicey Music; today she's made the full record available for streaming:

CLRVYNT premiered the stream this morning, saying, "Happy Together provides a cohesive, carefully constructed listen, joining the gauzy, guitar-driven palette of its predecessor (2014's Gone Banana) to a more stylistically ambiguous template that draws upon jazz and dream-pop."

Praise for Happy Together:

"A soothsaying Laura Marling or a spacey Nico... evokes a classic-rock band blissing out by a glimmering shoreline." - NPR

"Spacious, warm, and eerie, with brass, guitar, and vocal melodies weaving in the ether." - Stereogum

Each disc to be presented in a thematically-arranged 10-song sequence, illuminating compositions from great American songwriters interpreted by Dylan through his artistry
as a vocalist, arranger and bandleader.

(Columbia Records; New York, NY; January 31, 2017) A three-disc  studio album from Bob Dylan, Triplicate, will be released on March 31, featuring 30 brand-new recordings of classic American tunes and marking the first triple-length set of the artist’s illustrious career.  With each disc individually titled and presented in a thematically-arranged 10-song sequence, Triplicateshowcases Dylan’s unique and much-lauded talents as a vocalist, arranger and bandleader on 30 compositions by some of music’s most lauded and influential songwriters.  The Jack Frost-produced album is the 38th studio set from Bob Dylan and marks the first new music from the artist since Fallen Angels, which was released in early 2016.

Triplicate will be simultaneously released in several configurations, including a 3-CD 8-Panel Digipak (http://smarturl.it/TriplicateCD), a 3-LP vinyl set (http://smarturl.it/TriplicateLP) and a 3-LP Deluxe Vinyl Limited Edition packaged in a numbered case (http://smarturl.it/TriplicateDeluxe). Triplicate is also available for pre-order on iTunes (http://smarturl.it/TriplicateiT), and one of its recordings, “I Could Have Told You,” can now be streamed via a “Vinyl Video” on YouTube (http://smarturl.it/ICouldHaveToldYou).

For Triplicate, Dylan assembled his touring band in Hollywood’s Capitol studios to record hand-chosen songs from an array of American songwriters including Charles Strouse and Lee Adams (“Once Upon A Time”), Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler (“Stormy Weather”), Harold Hupfield (“As Time Goes By”) and Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh (“The Best Is Yet To Come”).  The titles of the individual discs are ‘Til The Sun Goes DownDevil Dolls and Comin’ Home Late.

The artist’s two previous album of classic American songs, last year’s Fallen Angels and 2015’sShadows in the Night, were both worldwide hits and garnered Grammy Award nominations in the category of Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.  Fallen Angels achieved Top Ten debuts in more than a dozen countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, The Netherlands and Austria, while Shadows in the Night debuted in the Top 10 in seventeen countries, with #1 debuts in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden and Norway.

Both albums received worldwide critical acclaim, with Randy Lewis writing of Fallen Angels in The Los Angeles Times, “[Dylan] immediately liberates songs from the big band/big orchestra world from which they emerged, and in which they are most frequently revisited…. [He] reaches to the blues at the core of many of these songs. Thus, they elicit the ache of romantic yearning and loss that often gets subsumed by swelling orchestral forces, background choirs or by singers who are more focused on crafting elegant vocals than finding emotional resonance."

The Telegraph’s Neil McCormick awarded Shadows in the Night five out of five stars and described the work as "spooky, bittersweet, mesmerizingly moving [with] the best singing from Dylan in 25 years.” Jon Pareles wrote of that album in the New York Times, “Mr. Dylan presents yet another changed voice…a subdued, sustained tone….Shadows in the Night maintains its singular mood: lovesick, haunted, suspended between an inconsolable present and all the regrets of the past.”

Bob Dylan's seven previous studio albums have been universally hailed as among the best of his storied career, achieving new levels of commercial success and critical acclaim for the artist. The Platinum-selling Time Out Of Mind from 1997 earned multiple Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year, while "Love and Theft" continued Dylan's Platinum streak and earned several Grammy nominations and a statue for Best Contemporary Folk album.

Modern Times, released in 2006, became one of the artist's most popular albums, selling more than 2.5 million copies worldwide and earning Dylan two more Grammys. Together Through Lifebecame the artist's first album to debut at #1 in both the U.S. and the UK, as well as in five other countries, on its way to surpassing sales of one million copies.  Tempest received unanimous worldwide critical acclaim upon release and reached the Top 5 in 14 countries, while Shadows in the Night and Fallen Angels were hailed by fans and lauded by critics for Dylan’s singular interpretive artistry.

These seven releases fell within a 19-year creative span that also included the recording of an Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning composition, "Things Have Changed," from the film Wonder Boys, in 2001; a worldwide best-selling memoir, Chronicles Vol. 1, which spent 19 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List, in 2004, and a Martin Scorsese-directed documentary, No Direction Home, in 2005. Bob Dylan also released his first collection of holiday standards,Christmas In The Heart, in 2009, with all of the artist's royalties from that album being donated to hunger charities around the world.

In December 2016, Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature by the Swedish Academy for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” He was a 2012 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian honor, and was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." He was also the recipient of the Officier de la Legion d'honneur in 2013, Sweden's Polar Music Award in 2000, Doctorates from the University of St. Andrews and Princeton University, as well as numerous other honors.
Bob Dylan has sold more than 125 million records around the world.

Sarah Bethe Nelson shares new track via She Shreds

Credit: Justin Frahm

"The point of [Fast Moving Clouds] is in the ways Ms. Nelson makes the songs
gradually move from one definition to another, drawing your attention to its repetition or simplicity,
then expanding the context or otherwise defying your expectations." - The New York Times

"Fast-Moving Clouds benefits immensely from its mid-fi, almost homemade sound,
which lends weight to her inventive pop flourishes." - Pitchfork
"If Nelson doesn't seem much like the self-aggrandizing type in person, she's even more
modest  on record, preferring to let the listener search for the jewel of a melody
at the center of each song.
With "Hazy", that search is a pleasure." - Consequence of Sound

Sarah Bethe Nelson is excited to share "Out Of My Reach," the newest single from her upcoming sophomore album Oh, Evolution (due February 24 on Burger Records). The premiere comes via a feature in She Shreds, who noted that Oh, Evolution "explores the evolution of love, life, relationships, and the self through sun-kissed psychedelic rock, doo wop, and bubblegum pop fused with rock fuzz and the occasional heavy riff." The track is available to stream or embed HERE, and Oh, Evolution is available for pre-order HERE.

Nelson was recently announced as an official artist at SXSW 2017, and she will be sharing a schedule of performances for this year's festival soon. More shows will also be announced in the coming months.

The poet Frank O'Hara wrote, "Each time my heart is broken it makes me feel more adventurous." Think of the eight songs on Oh, Evolution, then, as the catchy beat from a '60s AM radio, driving along the sun-kissed California coast, where all sadness melts away into the ocean. You're on a road trip with Sarah Bethe Nelson, who's at the wheel, meditating on her adventures with Mission District drag queens, DIY garage rockers, beer-logged poets, and romantics. The top's down, you're feeling the warm wind across your face as you escape the claustrophobic anxiety of cosmopolitan life. It changes you; the vibrations give you clarity.

Since releasing her debut Fast-Moving Clouds on Burger Records last year, Nelson's kept her job as Mission District bartender. She's also been on the road with her band writing Oh, Evolution with her self-referential Polaroids of a local Bay Area "Sugar Factory" (a fuzzy romantic allegory, perhaps), or resolving existential turmoil with bratty simplicity, "I Don't Care," which deliciously blends '70s adult-contemporary with glossy indie-pop. Nelson's clear alto is the guiding light on the album's first track, the lead single, "Hazy," where her gorgeously detached vocals flicker over jangling guitars that sparkle as she says, "You were lying. And I was crying." The track showcases Nelson in her natural state on this record, where melancholic lyrics are glued onto a notebook covered in glitter and primary colors. It's a departure from Fast-Moving Clouds, where the songs were reminiscent of '90s "slowcore." There's the opposite effect, too, on the track "Sugar Factory," where the sweet nostalgia in her words are clouded by fuzzed-out guitars and a brooding beat.
Juxtapositions aside, thematically, Oh, Evolution is centered on pulling back the shades on the regularity and stagnation of adulthood. It's a musical exhale by Nelson who casts the light in different directions, from the Midwestern rootsiness of Sheryl Crow on "Bright Thing," to '60s girl-group elements on "Hazy." The two ballads, "Face the Waves" and "Deadbolt" are both intensely emotional songs that deal with loss and decaying romance. It's Nelson in her preferred state on a record that's both self-aware bubblegum, and a fistful of crumbled love letters. Oh, Evolution was recorded at San Francisco's El Studio and engineered by Phil Manley.
Oh, Evolution tracklist:
1. Hazy
2. Evolution
3. I Don't Care
4. Sugar Factory
5. Bright Thing
6. Face The Waves
8. Deadbolt

"Never before have the duo sounded so animated, self-assured, or synchronized.  Barthel effortlessly alternates between half-rapped verses and cooed hooks, with Carter meeting every vocal pivot with a blast of bass, a frigid synth melody, or a distorted guitar riff." - PITCHFORK
"Three is Phantogram's most aggressive, accomplished, and humanizing work to date." - NYLON
"This upstate New York electro-pop duo makes tight, buzzing kiss-offs perfect for scoring teen-movie debauchery. A Top 40 audience may be in reach, if the masses are feeling edgy."  - NEW YORK TIMES
"Synthy bangers like "You Don't Get Me High Anymore" will shoot the duo to mainstream fame." - PEOPLE
"Lights up the dark." - SPIN
"The track is the very definition of 'contained chaos.' And I mean that in the best way." - IDOLATOR
"One moment it's a snarling synth-rock banger a la Radiohead's "Myxomatosis," the next it's an emotional computer ballad like Nicki Minaj's "Truffle Butter" beat bawling its eyes out." - STEREOGUM
Following the success of their recently released third studio LP, Three (out now on Republic) and sold-out live dates across North America, Europe and Austraia, Phantogram are excited to announce a new leg of North American and European tour dates for Spring 2017. The tour kicks off in Honolulu on February 25th and includes stops at some of the year's biggest music festivals, including Coachella, Sasquatch!, Middlelands and Governors Ball, while winding across select cities in Europe through June 4th (full tour dates below).  More dates to be announced soon!
The news comes just after the band kicked off 2017 with a fresh A-Trak remix of their hit song "You Don't Get Me High Anymore" featuring Joey Purp, a cover of Radiohead's "Weird Fishes / Arpeggi" for Triple J radio in Australia and a live-streamed Billboard performance - links to check all below.
