Samantha Urbani Shares New Track and Video, "Go Deeper"

"dripping in syrupy soul and potent bass lines." Pitchfork
"an understated bastion of New York's coolest of the cool art kids" Stereogum

Samantha Urbani may be best known as the front-woman for conceptual punk pop chart crashers Friends but, now with her long awaited solo project, she is about to cut her own unique swathe through the music landscape all over again.

Previous, online-only tracks, "1 2 3 4" and "U Know I Know" have provided tantalizing tasters of what to expect but, with new full single "Go Deeper", Urbani now cements her position as unparalleled pop contrarian bar none.

On first listen it is a deliciously infectious homage to 80s Jam & Lewis Janet Jackson sprinkled with the gold dust of vintage 90s Max Martin productions - but scratch beneath its surface and you may hear nods to everyone from 90s boybands to melodramatic auteurs such as Jim Steinman and Vangelis.

Similarly, the pristine sheen of the track belies Urbani's determinedly DIY production. Writing, recording and co-producing the track with a number of key collaborators, including co-producers Daniel Aged and Sam Mehran, in several different bedrooms and basements in LA and NYC, Urbani has somehow managed to make something that wouldn't sound out of place on Jackson's "Velvet Rope" - sleek and assured, poised and incisive.
And beneath the instantly hummable choruses and pop hooks is a deeper meditation on themes of power dynamics and communication. In Urbani's own words, "Go Deeper" is about "how necessary visibility and accountability are - getting to the bottom of things, transformatively: the harder it is, the more worth it. The only way out is to go through".
"Go Deeper" will be digitally available from Friday 30th June. Further information and physical and digital release details for Samantha's debut EP are to follow.  The EP will be released by Lucky Number, in-conjunction with Samantha's label URU.

Born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, Chaz Bear (formerly Bundick) has been actively involved in music going back to his early teenage years playing in punk and indie rock bands. Bear unveiled his Toro Y Moi guise in 2001, in which he began incorporating electronics and channeling a wider swath of stylistic influences - from indie rock and '60s baroque pop to '80s R&B, French house, and underground hip-hop - into his own solo music. By the time he graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2009 with a BA in graphic design, Bear had refined Toro Y Moi into a truly unique, captivating project, with numerous music magazines and blogs touting his hazy recordings as the sound of summer. His Carpark-released debut album, Causers of This, would follow in early 2010 and garnered high praise in many publications including NME and Pitchfork.

With each subsequent record, Bear revealed himself to be as prolific as diverse. From the space-age funk of 2011's Underneath the Pine to the introspective, house-tinged pop and soul of 2013's Anything in Return, to the '70s radio gold influences percolating throughout 2015's What For?, Bear consistently steered Toro y Moi in new directions while never sacrificing his melodic sensibility or keen ear for arrangements and texture. Although his most recent excursions - last year's stunning concert film/album, Live from Trona(featuring an expanded line-up of Toro Y Moi's touring group performing in the California desert), and his Star Stuff collaboration with jazz duo the Mattson 2 (just released in late March on Carpark sister label Company Records, which Bear runs) - were full-band affairs, his latest Toro Y Moi album is a much more personal outing.

Recorded and produced by Bear in Portland, Oregon, between March 2016 and March 2017, the spacious arrangements mirror the intimate, soft-hued pop of Boo Boo. Eschewing the traditional rock instrumentation of What For?, slow- pulsing neon synths and electronics are once again far more prevalent, with subtle '80s influences finespun through his song craft. Throughout, Bear plays all of the instruments, with the exception of guest spots from Anthony Ferraro (a/k/a Astronauts, etc. and also Toro y Moi's live keyboardist) and Madeline Kenney (Company Records recording artist). Toro y Moi's most reflective album to date, the woozy contemplations and daydreams of Boo Boo point toward an idyllic path of catharsis for not only the listener, but for Chaz Bear himself.

Midnight Sister Announces Debut ‘Saturn Over Sunset’

Midnight Sister Announces Debut ‘Saturn Over Sunset’

Paradoxically, there’s really only a fine-haired difference between the satanic lullaby
that begins Rosemary’s Baby and the heart-swelling, joyous monotone of Shelley Duvall’s
“He Needs Me” from Altman’s Popeye. At a glance, they do seem like polar opposites.
But some inter-dimensional Hollywood wormhole connects them if you allow your mind
take it there. It is this very slit in the fabric of The Hollywood Magic Spacetime
Continuum that the slinky, mysterious duo know as Midnight Sister is able to travel.
Somewhere in the back lots of Burbank, they dimension hop across this fantastic megacosm.
It’s where Michael Jackson met E.T. It’s how several David Bowies were able to exist
seemingly at once. “Canary,” the song that begins Midnight Sister’s debut album Saturn
Over Sunset, is a thread stretched through this Hollywood multiverse. Its languid lullaby
verses are swept up into discombobulating instrumental tidal waves — all sonorous,
analog bloops and bleeps.

Midnight Sister — the project of intense creatives Juliana Giraffe and Ari Bazoulian —
is brought to you by the isolating landscape of the San Fernando Valley — its colors,
its diners, its lunatics, its neon lights. Both lifelong residents of this storied valley,
Giraffe and Bazoulian have only become more inspired by the area’s mythology over the years,
its two-faced magical wonderland and tragic circus. And Saturn Over Sunset works almost
as an album version of Altman’s Shortcuts, each song a character study of the valley’s
odd personae.

Giraffe, 23, a daughter of an LA disc jockey, was raised almost exclusively on disco and
Bowie. Her lyrics and lyrical melodies, informed very much by her filmmaking background,
were composed gazing out from a tiny retail window on Sunset Boulevard. Her Rear
Window-like longing allowed her imagination torun wild and cook up the wild narratives
that would fill Balouzian’s compositions. Balouzian, 27, classically trained and already
a go-to arranger for odd-pop names like Tobias Jesso Jr. and Alex Izenberg. Midnight Sister
represents a first for both of them. It’s Giraffe’s first time writing and performing music.
And it’s Balouzian’s first foray into playing true pop music.

Saturn Over Sunset is a shared musical vision of Hollywood’s oddest corners. It is the
baroque, eldritch alley you must pass through to fine the speakeasy night of your life.
You’ll come out bleary-eyed and the sunrise will be pouring all pink and orange through
the smog and palm trees.

Mogwai have shared new track "Party In The Dark," from the eagerly awaited album Every Country's Sun, out September 1st via Temporary Residence Ltd. "Party In The Dark" will be available to purchase on 7" on August 25th, including the exclusive b-side track "Eternal Panther."Perhaps the most fully realized art-pop sing-along in the band's discography, "Party In The Dark" combines a post-punk blueprint with expansive space-rock and has been described by Dazed as "a New Order-nodding melodic joy". It follows the release of previous album single "Coolverine."
Every Country's Sun sees the Scottish band join forces once again with producer Dave Fridmann for the first time since 2001's Rock Action. The new record takes two decades of Mogwai's signature, contrasting sounds - towering intensity, pastoral introspection, synth-rock minimalism, DNA-detonating volume - and distills it, beautifully, into 56 concise minutes of gracious elegance, hymnal trance-rock, and transcendental euphoria.
The band recently performed Every Country's Sun in its entirety for the first time in a triumphant surprise show at this year's Primavera Sound in Barcelona. In a live review of the performance, The Quietus wrote: "... the material bounds with purpose and spirit, depth and intelligence, quiet triumph and (particularly toward the end) emphatic weight, promising a record of cleverly-woven instrumentalism that slays and sates in remarkable unison."
Mogwai recently announced a major world tour, kicking off in Oslo on October 10, taking in dates inEuropeNorth America, and the UK, wrapping up with a performance at London's O2 Academy Brixton on December 15, followed by a massive hometown show at The SSE HydroGlasgow onDecember 16. Before then, they will headline Festival No.6 in September. Visit mogwai.co.uk for full ticket information.

Wye Oak announce shows and limited-edition rarities 7-inch in September

At the end of September, Wye Oak will embark on a special tour. The band describes what the audience can expect at these performances:

We’re so excited to set out on a brief run of smaller, more intimate shows this fall, where we’ll be trying out a bunch of brand-new material for the first time, taking questions from the audience, and just generally exposing y’all to our legendary brand of TMI-style stage banter. Come for a sneak peek at what’s next for us, or just to say hi.

Also, on September 22, Merge will release “Spiral” b/w “Wave Is Not the Water”, a limited-edition 7-inch on red vinyl. Pre-order your copy now! Jenn and Andy told us a little about each track, both of which were originally released in partnership with Adult Swim:

“Spiral” popped up around 2012, at a time before we began work on Shriek. We were just starting to experiment with synthetic and more pop-oriented sounds, and also got assistance on the marimba from our friend Rod Hamilton, with whom Jenn was sharing a loft at the Copycat in Baltimore at the time.

“Wave Is Not the Water” was created in the early months of 2017, without either of us ever setting foot in the same space. Andy was touring as the drummer for Lambchop and volleying the recording back and forth with Jenn via email, as seems to be the current state of things.

Pre-order “Spiral” b/w “Wave Is Not the Water” now in the Merge store, and don’t miss these very special evenings with Wye Oak!

Wye Oak on tour:
Sep 28 Charlotte, NC — Side Stage @ The Neighborhood
Sep 29 Atlanta, GA — City Winery
Sep 30 Pittsboro, NC — Shakori Hills w/ Sylvan Esso
Oct 02 Nashville, TN — City Winery
Oct 03 Newport, KY — The Southgate House Revival
Oct 04 Pittsburgh, PA — Club Cafe
Oct 05 Hudson, NY — Club Helsinki
Oct 06 New York, NY — City Winery
Oct 07 Baltimore, MD — The Ottobar

Liars Announce New Album "TFCF"; Listen to "Cred Woes"

OUT AUGUST 25, 2017

Photo: Zen Sekizawa
"There's acoustic guitar all over this record! How ridiculous is that?" – Angus Andrew

LIARS announce details of a long awaited album, TFCF, out on August 25, 2017, and confirm an autumn tour following a string of festival dates throughout the summer.

Liars have, as a matter of course, sounded radically different with each album, pursuing new concepts and occupying diverse mindsets. On this, Liars’ eighth studio album, the bustling backdrops of Los Angeles, Berlin and New York have been replaced with a presence far more intimate and autobiographical as Liars once again boldly step out of their comfort zone into vastly new musical territory.

Listen to “Cred Woes,” the first track to be shared from TFCF (which stands for Theme From Crying Fountain), here.

Pre-order the special limited edition double vinyl with exclusive tracks recorded during the TFCFsessions from deep in the Australian bush,

In addition to a string of festival dates in Europe and the US this summer, Angus and a new touring band have also announced details of an autumn tour. Full details below with more to be confirmed. For more information as well as exclusive album and ticket bundles,
visit the Liars website.

Liars have been giving fans a glimpse of the forthcoming album via a series of short clips spelling out Theme From Crying Fountain, watch these

Following an amicable parting of ways with Aaron Hemphill, Liars is now Angus Andrew, who decamped to his native Australia, specifically to a remote part of the Australian bush, to create an album unlike any Liars had attempted before.

Angus Andrew explains, “Suddenly, the tides of the ocean became the most important thing to me, because I live right on the ocean now, and to get my boat out in the morning to get groceries on the mainland I’ve got to know when the tide is coming in, or I’ll get stuck. Very basic things like that suddenly became top priority in my life. And the effect was interesting. The last record, Mess, was made in LA, and had very tight corners and clean edges – it was sharp, programmed, organised. It sounds a lot like living in a city. But now, everything started to fall off-time.”

As he recorded the tracks for the new album, Angus kept a microphone running that he’d set up just outside of his studio, pointed out into the bush. “A lot of the sounds I was working on were samples, they lived inside my computer, but I still wanted to have a connection with everything around me,” he says.“So everything I was recording was in context of the world outside the studio… Sometimes I’d have my headphones on, just listening to the bush, and a bird would fly up and scream into the microphone. The truth is, even in New York or LA, I was still pretty isolated. Here, there are no other people around, but I feel much more connected to the environment around me than in a big city.”

The album’s reinvention of the Liars paradigm – blurring the lines between electronic and acoustic, between the experimental impulse and the addictive pop sensibility – is evidence that Angus’s creative energies remain as healthy as ever, even given the upheaval within the group.

TFCF was written and recorded by Liars (Angus Andrew). Butchy Fuego, who performed live with Liars following Julian Gross’s departure in 2014, plays drums on three tracks. TFCF was mixed by Gareth Jones and mastered by Christian Wright.

Danish vocalist, songwriter and breakout star ’s new video for latest single “Nights With You” debuts today. Watch the video, filmed in Sofia, Bulgaria with director Bouha Kazmi, here.

“‘Nights With You’ was written for my best (and oldest) friend, and the song is a celebration of our friendship and of my love for her,” says MØ. “I obviously wanted the video to be about friendship but I wanted it to communicate this in a wide and universal way. I wanted it to be a reflection on unity in both bright times and in dark—about standing together strong and shining the light across borders and generations.

“It probably sounds like a mouthful, but that was what was going through my mind when we started making this video. I wanted the setting to be an odd beautiful realness…an alternate reality, which is where we all seem to live these days.”

“Nights With You,” produced with Benny Blanco, Cashmere Cat and SOPHIE, is MØ’s first solo release of 2017. Her unique songwriting and vocal style have earned her status as one of the pop world’s fastest rising stars and the respect of its most influential producers and songwriters, including Diplo, Blanco, Cashmere CatCharli XCX and many more.

The new track follows a momentous year with several high profile guest appearances—Major Lazer’s smash hits “Cold Water” and “Lean On,” one of the most successful songs of all time, among them. MØ’s own singles “Kamikaze” and “Final Song” have climbed charts worldwide ahead of her forthcoming, second studio album.

Hailing from Funen, Denmark, MØ is Karen Marie Ørsted. In 2014 her debut album, No Mythologies To Follow, was released to great critical success. Pitchfork described MØ’s voice as “a powerful and versatile tool comfortable expressing emotional turmoil as it is wearing a fuck-the-haters scowl,” while Consequence of Sound praised the album as “a polished pop package that boasts bite as well as her refreshingly charming magnetism.” In 2015, MØ teamed up with Major Lazer to co-write and sing “Lean On,” which is one of the most streamed songs of all time on Spotify, peaked at #1 on Top 40 radio in the U.S. and has more than 2 billion views on the official music video.

MØ recently performed her hit collaboration with Snakehips, “Don’t Leave,” on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” alongside the British duo—watch here.

The National Announce "Guilty Party" Single + Throw A Guilty Party In Hudson, NY

Today, The National have released the single "Guilty Party" off their forthcoming album, Sleep Well Beast out September 8th on 4AD. Sleep Well Beast was produced by Aaron Dessner with co-production by Bryce Dessner and Matt Berninger and recorded at Aaron's Hudson Valley, NY studio, Long Pond. To celebrate the forthcoming album the band will be throwing a Guilty Party at Basilica Hudson on July 14th and 15th. The collaborative concert will be performed in the round and will feature Buke & Gase, Nadia Sirota, Mouse on Mars, Sō Percussion and moreThe band has released 700 tickets for each night and they're now available for purchasehere with a portion of ticket sales benefiting Basilica Hudson. Each guest attending the show will receive a "Guilty Party" 7 inch double "A" split with "The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness." Beer will be provided by Mikkeller.

Video artist Casey Reas will be contributing live projection mapping for the event. Reas also directed the music video for the single, "Guilty Party." "The video is a dream about memory and the degradation of memory; it's about distance in time and space," says Reas. "Time moves forward, but then backward as memory. The image of the two-faced Roman god Janus, who can look into the past and future, is the core visual language."

Last week in Paris and the UK, The National performed new material off the forthcoming album for audiences for the first time. Portions of their victorious main stage set at Glastonbury can be viewed via the BBC. NME said in reviewing the Glastonbury performance, "their set's only flaw: it just all ended too soon. But the impact they made was immense. They've played the long game, and they've won. It's time for the world's biggest cult band to become a whole new beast."

The National will tour across the world in support of the album, kicking off in Cork, Ireland on September 16th. Highlights include Forest Hills Stadium in New York on October 6th, The Hollywood Bowl on October 11th and multiple night residencies in more than 10 cities across Europe and North America. Every ticket for previously announced shows in North America includes a digital copy of Sleep Well Beast delivered on September 8th.
