LA Duo Howls to Release new song "White Noise"

Los Angeles Duo Howls to Release New Single “White Noise”
On Buddyhead Records

Los Angeles’s duo Howls, are set to release their newest single “White Noise”  on Buddyhead Records on February 3rd. “White Noise” marks a new direction for the band who’s self-titled debut, released last year, was praised by Philthy Magazine as "...the sexiest record of the year." and the Aquarian said “Not only does Howls instill a charmingly magnetic vibe into each song, the duo also mesmerizes listeners with tranquil melodies that channel thrilling emotions.”

After wearing many musical hats, Howls were inspired to take their music in a different direction, “because music should be fun sometimes too,” says Howls female half Annalee Fery. Howls debut album was guitar driven brooding electronica, and this newest song was penned with the intention of making people want to dance. This new direction marks a big first for the band. This is the first time they brought in an outside producer, Jon Siebels, to help them capture the sound of “White Noise.”

“We’ve always dabbled in different instrumentation in Howls,” says guitarist  Christian Stone. “ White Noise started out as an idea at rehearsal and became a staple of our live show as a guitar-based thing. We tried recording it this way but we weren’t happy with the results at all… So we decided, to experiment, and brought in producer Jon Siebels. He stripped away all the ‘traditional’ instrumentation and really focused on synths and programmed drums instead. Suddenly the song made sense!”

Despite the new sonic directionHowls have retained their signature juxtaposed style of a dark and heavy lyrics coated in upbeat and fun melodies with “White Noise.” This song is about compassion, specifically compassion for children in need. “Fortunately my mother raised me to have one of those pathetic hearts.” says Fery “The moment I see someone who's hurting, especially kids, my heart breaks. Being a mother has taught me as well to care for every lost and hurting child.”

"I like their rebelliousness …it’s about being liberated and calling the shots… I definitely see a lot of us in them… and we’re proud of that."
 Joey Ramone

“Songs like Wargasm, Diet Pill and Shitlist fulfill the ancient prophecy of a time when gurls would reinvent punk out of sheer delight in their own power”
 Robert Christgau

“Our fans couldn’t give a shit if we’re women… we did not set out to be an all girl band. It just happened that way."
– Donita Sparks

The infamously fierce, feminist pioneers of American grunge punk have announced a documentary film, directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker, Sarah Price (American Movie, The Yes Men, Summercamp) Titled L7: Pretend We're Dead, the film takes viewers on an all access journey into the 1990’s grunge movement that took the world by storm and the band that helped define it as the genre of a generation. Today they launch a Kickstarter, offering fans a remarkable array of rewards- including a potential séance with the band- as thanks for helping to fund the project. Go to theKickstarter project HERE to check out the full list and grab them while they are still available.

Culled from over 100 hours of vintage home movies taken by the band, never before seen performance footage, and candid interviews, L7: Pretend We're Dead chronicles the early days of the band's formation in 1985 to their height as the 'queens of grunge' and follows a roller coaster ride of triumphs and failures. It offers particularly revelatory insight into the band's eventual dissolution in 2001.

The formula: one part Donita’s love of pop and punk and one part Suzi’s hard rock and blues, charged with lyrics that had political bite and humor proved irresistible to the disenfranchised, the marginalized, and the punk. The excitement around the L7: Pretend We're Dead announcement has catalyzed a recently announced and widely anticipated reunion of the band in its original line-up. L7 will kick off a European tour, bringing their high-octane energy and anthemic chops to the stage to ignite audiences once again.

TORRES announces new album 'Sprinter' + shares single

TORRES SIGNS TO PARTISAN RECORDS
FOR MAY 5 (US) / MAY 18 (UK) RELEASE OF SPRINTER
SHARES NEW SINGLE "STRANGE HELLOS"

ANNOUNCES SPRING TOUR DATES
INCLUDING SXSW AND PRIMAVERA SOUND

LISTEN:
"Strange Hellos" via Pitchfork or Soundcloud

"Mackenzie Scott's voice conveys raw, urgent desperation, the sort we flinch from instinctually and are attuned, on a primal level, to heed." -Pitchfork (8.1 review for debut album

"Sprinter finds Mackenzie Scott pushing against the starkness of her 2013 self-titled debut into noisier, vicious rock without losing any of her razor-sharp songwriting." -Stereogum
"Minimalist songs and blistering anthems would fit seamlessly on a playlist alongside PJ Harvey, Cat Power and Emmylou Harris." -TIME Magazine (15 Artists To Watch in 2015)

TORRES knows the darkness. The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter otherwise known as Mackenzie Scott waits until anything-an idea, an emotion, a memory-gnaws at her, tearing at her fingers and throat until she releases it in song. Her husky voice strains against its human biological constraints like a wild-eyed horse, whispering desperately "Don't give up on me just yet" on one end and yowling about jealousy with unnerving intensity on the other. Following her self-titled debut in 2013, TORRES pushes herself to even noisier extremes on Sprinter, a punishing self-examination of epic spiritual and musical proportions.

"There's so much I want to sing, but there's no room for toothbrushes in poetry," Scott murmurs in a resilient quaver while barely fingering the strings of her guitar on "The Exchange," the final song and the heart of her second album. "That was the one that brewed the longest in my subconscious before I wrote it," says Scott. "It was just a tough one, no getting around it." The reason is right there in the beginning: she sings of her adopted mother losing her biological mother twice-once at birth and again when she discovered her adoption papers had been lost in a basement flood.

A keen awareness of Scott's place in her family and in the world suffuses Sprinter, contributing to themes of alienation throughout. "You're just a firstborn feeling left behind," she sings on the ominously brewing "Son, You Are No Island," which references one of Scott's influences on this record: English poet John Donne's 1624 poem "Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions." Scott's tortured wailing circles spirals downward around itself, reflecting in a dark mirror the feelings of an adopted child.

"Whether it be abandonment, or fear of rejection, or perhaps inability to connect with people, comes down to that fear of isolation, of not being good enough," she says. "Those are themes that have cropped up in my personal life, in my writing, and my mom can definitely understand that herself."

But Scott escaped the confines of her churning mind in order to find herself by recording Sprinter in the market town of Bridport in Dorset, England; and then at the Bristol studio of Portishead's Adrian Utley. With his guitar riffs and synthesizers lingering in the background like a lowland mist and PJ Harvey's Robert Ellis and Ian Olliver on rhythm-the two fortuitously reuniting 23 years after the release of Dry, and in Scott's 23rd year of living-she crafted a "space cowboy" record. "That's as simply as I can say it," says Scott, who cites inspirations as diverse as Funkadelic and Nirvana, Ray Bradbury and Joan Didion. "I wanted something that very clearly stemmed from my Southern conservative roots but that sounded futuristic and space-y at the same time."

It seems like an odd thing to look for in the picturesque seaside green, rolling hills in the south of England, but Scott had never been there before, and as a stranger in a strange land she found what she was looking for: a lost childhood. Sprinter was recorded in a room that had formerly been used as a children's nursery, which combined with the alien landscape fuels the self-searching that roils TORRES' music. "Cowboy Guilt" perfectly encapsulates the contrast of Deep South conservatism with future sounds, juxtaposing George W. Bush parodies with wearing one's Sunday best, bouncing on a mechanically whimsical melody.

After all, it was Scott's Baptist upbringing 4,000 miles away in Macon, GA that gave her a voice in the first place. When her parents gave her an acoustic guitar at age 15, after giving her flute and piano lessons before that, she would sing church hymns at the local nursing home to get over her stage fright. As Scott moved away from organized religion toward something far more real and personal ("I still think of myself as quite God-fearing," she says), she ranged farther from home, to Nashville-where she grappled with her outsider status yet again, faced with an insular music scene as hard to break into as if it were surrounded by England's famous hedgerows-and then to New York, where she finally felt another semblance of being at home.

"Nashville was just a bit too small for me," she says. "I don't really like walking down the street and knowing everyone that I see along the way. I was raised in a small town and there are very special things about it, but I don't prefer to live that way. I like the chaos of the city."

THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN ANNOUNCES NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES

THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN ANNOUNCES NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES CELEBRATING THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF PSYCHOCANDY

VIDEO: "NEVER UNDERSTAND" -
"the most notorious band since the Sex Pistols...Some of Psychocandy is beautifully wasted pop; some sounds like being trapped in a wind tunnel full of broken glass and bees; the rest sounds like both happening at once." - Dorian Lynskey, The Observer

"The Jesus and Mary Chain's debut is a decadent alt-rock masterpiece of bubblegum pop - with "Just Like Honey," "My Little Underground" and "Never Understand" - drowned in feedback." - Rolling Stone, The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

"Psychocandy was meant to be a kick in the teeth to all of those who stood in our way at the time, which was practically the whole music industry. In 1985 there were a great many people who predicted no more than a six month life span for the Mary Chain." - Jim Reid

30 years on the band return - regularly cited by the media as one of the great rock'n'roll bands and by a raft of new groups as a major influence.

THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN is now pleased to announce its first full US run of Psychocandy US tour dates, hitting new cities in May 2015. This will be the continuation of a year of activity not only celebrating the 30th anniversary of Psychocandy but also looking firmly ahead to the future.

Mikal Cronin returns with MCIII

On May 5, Mikal Cronin will return with MCIII. Marked by the lush arrangements, stunning melodies, and deeply personal lyrical work for which Cronin is now known, the album is also a deliberate attempt to simply “go big.”

As he did on his self-titled 2011 debut and 2013’s MCII, Cronin arranged and played nearly all of the record himself, including the tzouras, a traditional Greek string instrument he heard and subsequently bought while on tour in Athens. There’s French horn, saxophone, and trumpet. There are mood-altering crescendos and heartbreaking turns-of-phrase, guitars both gorgeous and pugnacious. No longer satisfied with the sound of “just one string player,” Cronin arranged parts for a full string quartet instead.

Listen & share “Made My Mind Up” from MCIII now, and pre-order the album at iTunes to receive an instant download of the track. The album is also available for pre-order on CD, LP, and cassette in the Merge store, where the first 500 LP orders will receive the album on clear vinyl. Limited quantities of the clear-vinyl run will also be available in independent stores worldwide on release day.
The Mikal Cronin band have announced tour dates beginning in February with more tour dates to come!

Letter from Joanna Newsom 2003

Noise Pop SF 2003 I would describe as "very mellow." At least the shows that I went to were that way. Although it started off with a pre-party with Har Mar Superstar. It was the first time I saw him, and would lead to many interviews later. I saw Stephen Malkmus, Cat Power, The Dirtbombs, The Von Bondies, The Pleased, Smog, Calexico, and more. It was probably memorable for being one of the first shows by Joanna Newsom. I ended up doing the very first interview with her, a few months afterwards, a year before her album came out.

I wrote Joanna a letter or an email. She sent me two eps and this letter in April 2003. I came back up to SF in June 2003 to do an interview with her.

I did an interview with:
Joanna Newsom (2003)
The Von Bondies (2003)

And later with:
The Pleased (2004)
Har Mar Superstar (2004)
The Dirtbombs (2004)

King Tuff’s “Headbanger” (Official Video) via Funny or Die

Watch: King Tuff’s “Headbanger” (Official Video)
via Funny or Die
http://FunnyOrDie.com/m/9911
King Tuff’s ‘Black Moon Spell’ available now on CD/LP/DLworldwide from Sub Pop
You can now watch “Headbanger,” the hilarious official video from King Tuff via Funny or Die. "Headbanger" stars the band, Steve Jones (Sex Pistols) and plenty of other bands from the bottom of the charts of past and present.
Jake Folgenest, who directed the new visual, had this to say: “As soon as I heard the King Tuff album I said, ‘Man I wish could watch a performance of them playing on "Top Of The Pops” in 1975.’ Since it would be impossible for that footage to exist, the next best thing was to call Steve Jones from The Sex Pistols and make it ourselves.”
King Tuff adds this: “We made another video for all the shitmonkeys of the world to enjoy (see Funny or Die January 21st)”
King Tuff’s 2015 tour is currently underway, with a show tonight January 21st in at Charlotte, NC at The Neighborhood Theatre and has been extended through April 20th in Tempe, AZ at Marquee.  Along the way, he’ll play shows with Ex Hex (January 21st-24th) and Father John Misty (March 25th-April 19th). Please find an updated list of tour dates below.
Black Moon Spell, featuring the highlights “Eyes of the Muse,” “Headbanger,” and the title track, was produced & mixed by Bobby Harlow at Studio B in Los Angeles, CA, with the exception of  “I Love You Ugly” and “Radiation,” which were produced by King Tuff. Black Moon Spell is available now through theSub Pop Mega Mart,  iTunes and Amazon.
What people are saying about King Tuff & Black Moon Spell:
“Thomas wins the 2014 glam-rock revival, plain and simple; Black Moon Spell is loaded with sterling examples of the genre from front-to-back.” [First Listen] - NPR Music
“Los Angeles-based singer-guitarist Kyle Thomas turns his love for Black Sabbath-style metal and T. Rex-style glam into exuberantly scuzzed-out-neo-Seventies guitar rock…But the real treat is his musical showmanship and the grimy guitars, especially on songs like the sweetly lascivious “Sick Mind.” He transforms his heroes’ black magic into debauched fun.” - Rolling Stone
“Crunchy riffs, sugary power-pop harmonies and a general beatific dudeness… Your fantasy coast-to-coast road trip will be poorer without this." - The Guardian

A scuzzy mix of garage rock and power pop, it's catnip for radio DJs in the spirit of The Who and Big Star. King Tuff is a he, not a band: Kyle Thomas has made three records as King Tuff, and the new one is called Black Moon Spell. "Eyes of the Muse" is an irresistible blast of guitar-driven pop with wild-man, Keith Moon-esque drum parts. ["Heavy Rotation" via "Morning Edition"] - NPR
“Thomas is a master craftsman with pedigree and Black Moon Spell is scuzzy, wired and bulging with Marc Bolan vocals, riffs Jimmy Page forgot to stick on a Zeppelin album and a bunch of outrageously catchy choruses. Big fun." - NME
“Kyle Thomas' King Tuff returns fiercer than ever with his take on psychedelia and classic rock, with generous doses of headbanging, humour and sentimentality. Black Moon Spell is an impressively diverse album, from the ballad "Staircase of Diamonds" and slick greaser tune "Eddie's Song" to the pared down acoustic "Ugly" and Ramones-y "Sick Mind.” [8/10, Review] - Exclaim!
“If the self-titled record was the test to see what exactly King Tuff was capable of, Black Moon Spell is the streamlining of those results, adjusting them to achieve maximum impact. If you found the replay value of King Tuff to be pretty high, this one’s going to raise the bar.” - Passion of the Weiss
"Heading straight back into the studio with a mission to freak the fuck out, what emerges is sheer, primordial garage rock ooze. Unrelenting from the off, Black Moon Spell is visceral rock 'n' roll, all blood, sweat, tears and outrageous riffs.” - Clash
"Black Moon Spell is defined by cataclysmic, thrashing crescendos and the kind of grubby riff that tends to be found in Jack White’s “DON’T OPEN: TOP SECRET” drawer.” “His most impressive bit of songwriting yet.” - DIY
“Kyle Thomas has made noise with a lot of different bands: Happy Birthday, Feathers, Witch. But he really hit his artistic stride when he renamed himself King Tuff and started knocking out snotty, scabby, attitudinally glammed-out garage rock. King Tuff’s new album Black Moon Spell... rips and snorts and kicks and struts.” STEREOGUM
Now, with Black Moon Spell, Thomas seizes that amphetamine groove and launches it into a glittering explosion. It’s an album whose fiber is built on the smoky cigarette haze of a dimly lit dive bar — best served with whiskey and a raucous crowd. Even through charges of distortion and screeching, fuzzed-out guitar, the hooks are catchy as hell, churning out infectiously sunny waves and sharply angled guitars. Thomas’ energy is palpable, and his magnetism smacks of the nervy core of late ’70s rock. -Consequence of Sound
"For his latest concoction, Sub Pop slack-rocker King Tuff has filled his broiling, metaphorical cauldron to the brim with incantatory snarls about “witches’ brew”, searing guitar solos and bucketloads of blood, ‘hot winter’ sweat and so on, with the outcome an intoxicating potion of big ol’ glam-rock proportions.” -Dots & Dashes
"King Tuff is the epitome of American Rock, he is larger than life with huge riffs and even crazier lyrics." -Louder Than War
“From the moment Black Moon Spell surges into life through shudderingly distorted, powerful guitar riffs and hauntingly aggressive vocals, it’s clear that Tuff means business.” - Crack Magazine
“Fourteen songs packed full of sex, classic rock references, parties, teenage rebellion, weirdness and downright stupidity… Black Moon Spell is one hell of a ride.” - London in Stereo
