“Mr. Bundick’s music sizzled in a way his peers’ generally did not, and it had an emotional presence that was signature as well.”—The New York Times

“[Chaz Bundick is] a prolific artist who never comes off like he’s in a race with his muse.”

Vice’s Noisey is premiering the Lauren Gregory-directed video for Toro Y Moi’s “Rose Quartz” from their critically acclaimed new record Anything in Return at http://youtu.be/8ID1plssS4s.

Anything in Return, out now on Carpark Records, is the third full-length release from the electronic psych-pop act helmed by producer, singer and songwriter Chaz Bundick. The group is touring throughout the fall in support of the record; for a list of tour dates please see below. Written and recorded in the wake of a cross-country move from Bundick’s longtime home in South Carolina to Berkeley, CA, Anything in Return continues to garner critical praise:
“The strong Anything in Return, Mr. Bundick’s recently released third full-length album…is by far the most muscular of his work.”—The New York Times
★★★ ½ (out of 5)—Rolling Stone
“The musically and emotionally rewarding Anything in Return evokes the feeling of being young with options and in no hurry to figure it all out.”—Pitchfork
“inventive and complex”—The Guardian
“[Anything in Return is] the very best thing Toro Y Moi has accomplished, with complex rhythms and attentive, near-perfect production.”—Filter

In addition to his recorded work, Bundick continues his work as a visual artist, designing a limited edition pair of sneakers for Vans this fall. One hundred pairs will be given away in conjunction with North American tour dates through February 2014; from now through November 17 fans can enter to win at http://toroymoi.blogspot.com/2013/09/vansgiveaway.html. In addition to the shoes, Vans will distribute cards that can be redeemed for free downloads of the band’s live performances of “Rose Quartz” and “So Many Details” from their recent House of Vans performance in Brooklyn.

Along with his sneaker design, Bundick has also designed a limited edition skateboard for Alien Workshop that will be available at skate shops starting October 15. The Live from the House of Vans download cards will be also be available with the limited edition boards and at skate shops in upcoming tour markets; in-store appearances by Chaz at select locations to be announced.

Having spent his formative years playing in punk rock bands and studying graphic design at the University of South Carolina, Bundick began making bedroom recordings under the name Toro Y Moi in 2001. Those early recordings made up the seeds of his critically acclaimed 2010 debut album Causers of This, which was hailed as “a bold introduction to a promising newcomer” by Filter. Bundick went on to record 2011’s highly regarded Underneath the Pine and the Freaking Out EP before making his move to California in 2012.

“Ms. Bulat has a voice well suited to interiority, warm and honeyed…”—The New York Times

To mark the release of her highly anticipated album Tall Tall Shadow, out today on Secret City Records, Bullett is premiering Basia Bulat’s video for the title track from her new album. Directed by Stephanie Comilang, the video was shot exclusively on VHS in Berlin, where Comilang resides. The video can be found HERE on Bullett and HERE on YouTube. Bulat was featured in this week’s New York Times Sunday Playlist, which says  her music has a sound that “nods to Fleetwood Mac and the early Joni Mitchell.” Bulat kicks off her international tour tomorrow night. Please see reverse for full tour routing.
Bulat co-produced Tall Tall Shadow with Tim Kingsbury of Arcade Fire and Mark Lawson, Grammy-winning engineer of Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs. The album is inspired in equal parts by tragic loss and abundant joy, which is reflected in more directly personal, emotional lyrics. It marks a sonic departure from her earlier work, moving away from her long-time practice of writing songs on the guitar or autoharp and instead primarily using piano and charango, an instrument which Bulat has been unable to put down since receiving it from a friend.
Bulat chose to work with Lawson and Kingsbury knowing that they would not only challenge her but also push her music to new places. Several cuts on Tall Tall Shadow were recorded during live, full band takes, an achievement she attributes to the creative environment nurtured by her two co-producers. The album also features the work of one of her favorite collaborators, her brother Bobby.
The album follows Bulat’s 2007 debut album Oh, My Darling and 2010’s Heart of My Own, of which NPR Music says Bulat’s voice is “a single powerful element.” SPIN praises the Juno-nominated singer’s “bright harmonies and … resonant alto voice” and Mother Jones raves, “this crafty Canadian folkie turns seemingly simple songs into engrossing accounts of desire and regret.”
Bulat has garnered great critical acclaim; Pitchfork praises her “rare, extraordinary voice,” and Filter declares “Bulat can pine with the best of them.” She has toured in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia sharing the stage with artists including St. Vincent, Tune-Yards, Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird and Nick Cave. She has also collaborated with Owen Pallett, who created orchestral arrangements of a selection of Bulat’s songs that have been performed by the Halifax Symphony Orchestra, Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony.

Drag City To Reissue Classic Royal Trux Album

Back in play just to celebrate 14 years, 2 months and 12 days since it's original release is Royal Trux's penultimate album, Veterans of Disorder.
Coming off the fan-favorite Accelerator LP, it was clearly time to build on expectations, right? Uh...listen, maybe this isn't the band for you. Neil and Jennifer were fans of rock n roll to the finish, sure - but in that, Royal Trux was a dyed-in-the-wool contrarian enterprise, rebels to the core, and everything they endeavored to was viewed from the several angles necessary to call a spade a dupe, etc. And so it was with counterintuitive rose-colored glasses strapped on tight to their work-goggles that Veterans of Disorder was conceived. Accelerator had deployed a unified production concept, with pleasingly mashed-together sonics in an coruscated, ultra-compressed mix. Fine. That was out; New ways of hearing would be necessary this time around. VOD's songs seldom sound as if they're coming from the same session as each other, and the distorto riff-rock that had caused so much intake of breath in '98 was abandoned for a generally cleaner, wider-ranging sound overall.
Which is not to say that Veterans of Disorder lacks a guitarish whip-crack and crunch. The lead-breakdown on "Lunch Money" is supreme, the rockers "Second Skin" and "Waterpark" are directed with assuredly acidic guitars, and the album concludes with seven minutes of deeply focused jamming, as Neil switches tones mid-solo, burning it DOWN several different ways before concluding with threnodial runs of pedal steel.
Even in the dark early days of the band, humor was an essential element to Truxian logic, and perhaps the most enduring qualities of Veterans (after the hard-hitting rock and the songs themselves) are the laughs. Opening with "Waterpark," Royal Trux non-ironically located themselves at play (and loving it) in a symbol of contemporary America's odious heartland. From a band who'd most recently dropped a misshapen and obscure "3 Song EP," this was comedy itself, but the music has the final word, as Jennifer's ode to a day in the sun is matched perfectly by Neil's light-yet-stinging power chords. The call-and-response vocals and percussion breakdowns of "¡Yo Se!" are somewhat pricelessly provocative, as is "Sickazz Dog"'s musique concrète/pop opera romp (in the process divining an entirely different result than the ur-industrial Twin Infinitives). But Jennifer's snake-riding delivery on "Coming Out Party" (including the knee-slappers, "it rhymes with bull-SHIT" and "come back, Dracula, come back!") vs. the serpentine instrumental arrangement is perhaps the album's most overt laff-riot.
Assembled at several studios (including their own home rig) in and around the woods of rural Virginia, Veterans of Disorder unites its divergent approaches under a glossy exterior. This was a band that had fought the major-label wars, and their product, as subversive as it was, was still aiming for the greatest possible impact - an ambition that had no deleterious impact on the music at hand. Instead, Royal Trux revealed themselves once again to be rock satirists supreme, with pure rock and roll that was intent on undermining itself and its audience from within. With less than a year left in their fifteen-year run, Royal Trux were flying at a speed that most bands dream of - and Veterans of Disorder is one of their (many) finest albums. It sees the light of day again on November 19th, 2013 via Drag City.

About The Holydrug Couple:
The Holydrug Couple have done a lot of growing since their first release with Sacred Bones Records in 2011. The “couple,” consisting of Ives Sepúlveda and Manuel Parra recorded Noctuary in Santiago, Chile. They put together a home studio and recorded the entire album themselves, from start to finish. Feeling that no one else had been able to capture their sound, Ives decided to take a risk and produce and engineer the album on his own. After four months of obsessively working and barely leaving the house, Ives emerged with a final product of which the band is truly proud. All of this hard work has manifested in a more elaborated, astral sounding album than its predecessor, Awe. While Awe and their Ancient Land EP had a bluesier, woodsy sound, Noctuary plays out like a slow motion 60’s beach party dream that you never want to wake from. This is not your typical motorik beat kraut album; rather it sounds more like a breezy take on Love or Beau Brummels. The way that songs like “Willoweed” and “Paisley” flow seamlessly into one another, it is easy to see how listeners will become entranced by this new, dream-like world that The Holydrug Couple have created. These two stand-out tracks, as well as “Follow Your Way” really exemplify the growth of this band and signify the new direction they’re headed in.

Tricky will have to cancel some of the dates on his US tour due to further visa problems. The tour will now start in San Francisco at the Treasure Island Festival and conclude with a re-arranged date in New York on October 26.
Tricky has some juvenile offences for joyriding and forgery of the crown and the US authorities require full disclosure before granting any visas. The new hold-up has been in getting this information from the UK police authorities.
Regarding the cancellations, Tricky says, "The most upsetting thing about this, whatever happens it seems like it's me letting people down. Other people have always dealt with visas for me and it turns out that they have not advised me properly. Now I have been advised that this was going to be straightforward and easily done in time for this tour and now this has happened."

Visas are expected to be granted in time for the shows in San Fransisco, New York, Asheville and LA and Tricky will looking to tour fully in 2014. All upcoming Tricky US shows are listed below.

10/19 San Francisco, CA - Treasure Island Music Festival
10/23 Los Angeles, CA - El Rey Theatre
10/25 Asheville, NC - Mountain Oasis Electronic Music Summit
10/26 New York, NY - Webster Hall

The Jim Jones Revue, who just released their third studio album The Savage Heart in the US and Canada, were recently approached by Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode to remix the new DM single 'Should Be Higher'. Gahan is a fan of the band and the JJR were happy to oblige. The remix caused quite a stir amongst Depeche Mode fans, not having heard them sounding this way before!
You can listen to the remix here.
The Savage Heart was produced by Jim Sclavunos (of Grinderman / Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds), mixed by Jim Abiss (Arctic Monkeys, DJ Shadow, The Heavy), with spiritual guidance from the legendary Nick Lowe. Their most exhilarating work to date, The album expands the sonic remit of The Jim Jones Revue beyond their renowned brand of manic rock ’n’ roll to explore a virtual “heart of darkness” of new musical territory in the form of tribal stomps, field hollers, a capella rave-ups -- even a fuzzed-out feedback-laden doo-wop ballad! The Savage Heart swaggers with all the balls-out rocking of its predecessors, but offers too an expansive vision of the band, with a wider palette of sounds and even socially conscious lyrics. “While the group look back into the roots of rock n’ roll, we’ve never gone backwards in what we do,” says Jim Jones. “It’s always about pushing things forward for us.”
Contributing mightily to the vigorous sound captured on the album is Henri Herbert on keyboards. Henri, who joined the band in 2011, has diversified the band’s keyboard vocabulary, drawing not just on the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard, as well as Otis Spann, Pete Johnson and Albert Ammons. “He’s the Professor of Piano,” affirms Rupert Orton (guitar). “His wealth of knowledge is astounding. He’s really re-shaped our approach.”
Notorious for their maniacal high-energy shows, The Jim Jones Revue have been described by MOJO as “the greatest rock n’ roll band in the world right now”. Stay tuned for live shows in the US and Canada, including a one off  show in NYC at the Bowery Electric on New Year's Eve!

"The Savage Heart revels in the dark thrills of dark, bawdy rock 'n' roll....(his Revue's) sultry, sinister shuffle is already hard to resist." MOJO

At times, it indeed sounds like these songs are coming from a mythical parallel universe where rock’n’roll is still the key of life. Jones never deviates from his mission to re-energise the form....drenches it in feedback and sets the thing aflame." The Guardian

"London's rock 'n' roll true believers serve up their best work yet." Q

"Relentless...Pulsating....Poignant...Rousing...Shimmering...Gorgeous...Boisterous...Riotous" - Rolling Stone
