The Black Angels
Blue Horizon is excited to debut "Evil Things," a new track from The Black Angels. The song, which is available for posting HERE, is off their upcoming album Indigo Meadow, out April 2nd. RollingStone.com premiered "Evil Things," calling it "a heavy-duty headbanger built around a foreboding guitar riff." The track is available now on iTunes as an instant download with pre-orders HERE.

"Evil Things" focuses on a man and a woman on opposite sides of a conflict who meet on a war-torn battlefield. Frontman Alex Maas elaborated on this concept to Rolling Stone, saying "they come to the realization that, by nature, humans have the capacity to be either evil or benevolent, empathetic and compassionate. They share an obvious mutual concern for the human condition, but don't feel as though they are doing anything to make things better. They ask themselves: 'What am I going to do with the power that I have?' This song asks that question."

The Black Angels' most revelatory collection thus far, Indigo Meadow marks the Austin, Texas-based band's fourth full-length release, following 2010's acclaimed Phosphene Dream. Once again The Black Angels prove themselves the undisputed avatars of contemporary psychedelic rock, simultaneously exalting the genre's kaleidoscopic past as they thrust it ever further into the future.
Now a quartet, the band - with the able support of producer John Congleton (David Byrne & St. Vincent, Clinic, Explosions In The Sky) - have brought new focus to their wide-ranging songcraft, their righteous riffs and dogmatic drones gaining increased power as they fuel a more expansive emotional trajectory.  The ominous organ grooves and carpet-bombing beats still resonate with feral rush and napalm fire, but songs like "Love Me Forever" and the bottomless blue title track see more than a little light piercing the Black Angels' notorious heart of darkness.

Founded in 2004, The Black Angels have been the spearhead of the post-millennial psychedelic movement, picking up the mantle of their hometown's long lysergic history and reinvigorating it with progressive political commentary and unrestrained creativity and ambition.  Long hailed for their monumental live sets, The Black Angels will celebrate the arrival of Indigo Meadow with a major North American tour, set to get underway April 4th at Athens, GA's Georgia Theatre and then culminating with a May 26th date at San Antonio, TX's appropriately named White Rabbit.  Support comes from a stellar line-up of lysergically like-minded artists, including Allah-Las, Elephant Stone, Hanni El Khatib, and Wall of Death (see attached itinerary).

The Black Angels:  Christian Bland - guitar, drone machine/organ * Alex Maas - vocals, bass, organ, drone machine * Stephanie Bailey - drums, percussion * Kyle Hunt - keyboards, percussion, bass, guitar.

MP3: "Nothing's Changed" -

Tricky is back. Back with a new studio album, False Idols, and his own label (also bearing the False Idols name), but also back in a personal sense. "I was lost for ages," he says. "I was trying to prove something to people, trying to do something to please other people and also myself at the same time, which is never going to work. To be honest with you, I've been floating around since Chris Blackwell and Island. My last two albums, I thought they were good, but I realize now they weren't. This album is about me finding myself again."

Adrian Thaws is, perhaps, being a bit hard on himself. However, there is no doubt that False Idols stands as his most accomplished album since his earliest works. It opens with a cover of a Patti Smith song, "Somebody's Sins," which sees Tricky and vocalist Fran Belmonte whispering "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine" over a sparse groaning bass. The lead single "Parenthesis," which features a vocals from Peter Silberman of The Antlers, has more rhythmic grunt, which gives a different dimension to the dark gothic atmosphere that pervades the record. No-one does this kind of thing better.

The spirit of Tricky's '90s output looms large over False Idols. There are times when his entire career has seemed like a stubborn refusal to be defined by its success or sound. He has finally come to terms with it, even learned to embrace it. The light bulb moment came when he was sending demos to a friend. "All the songs which were easy for me to write, which I wrote in two hours, he sent me a message saying, 'This is why I loved you in the beginning.' The stuff that I'd thought about more, that stuff he was like, 'It's OK, yeah.' So then I knew. It brought me back to my natural instincts."

The resemblance to Maxinquaye is undeniable, though the material on False Idols is gentler; more mature. "Of all my records, the majority of people are into Maxinequaye," says Tricky. "That's because it was a time and a place. Maxinquaye was a part of their life. Some people say it was the soundtrack to their youth. You can't challenge that. But musically this is a better album." He pauses before adding. "Of course I know that people might not agree with that." Let's just say it's a stunning return to form and leave it at that.

Many of the songs on False Idols feature artists signed to Tricky's new label, including 24-year Londoner Francesca Belmonte and Fifi Rong. The album also includes collaborations with Nigeria's new global star Nneka, the aforementioned Peter Silberman. In the months before the album's release, False Idols will also release two EPs showcasing the label's roster on new non-album material produced by Tricky.

Why the name False Idols? "Because there's so much bollocks going on at the moment mate," Tricky fires back. "People follow celebrities and read every little thing they do. It's living vicariously through someone else. Get your own life. All this stuff is false idols. That's what helps keep the status quo." As to the label's mission, Tricky puts it thusly: "I signed to Island because of the artists and some of the stuff they've done-Bob Marley, Tom Waits. Who could I sign to now? Am I going to sign to a label because they've got Lady Gaga? I don't want to be part of that bollocks music industry. I'm trying to bring that Island kind of thing back. Obviously False Idols is never going to be an Island Records, but it's my way of trying to keep that part of the music industry going."

This commitment to the survival of artistry in new music seen Tricky collaborating with young musicians from Creep to Maya Jane Coles, popping up on Zebra Katz underground smash "Ima Read" with Gangster Boo and remixing "Crest" by Antlers.

"This new album I'll stand behind every track," Tricky says. "I don't care whether people like it. I'm doing what I want to do, which is what I did with my first record. That's what made me who I was in the beginning. If people don't like it, it don't matter to me because I'm back where I was."

Drafthouse Films, the film distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, announced today the acquisition of North American rights to Jeff Howlett and Mark Covino’s riveting rockumentary A Band Called Death, which is set to screen at this year’s SXSW Film Festival in the “24 Beats Per Second” film category. The film chronicles rebirth and rise to cult stardom of early-’70s African-American “proto-punk” trio Death, following a new generation’s discovery of a virtually unheard demo tape more than 30 years later. A theatrical and VOD release for A Band Called Death is scheduled for this summer.

Joining A Band Called Death at SXSW, will be the Hackney's children's band, Rough Francis; rock'n'roll truly runs deep in this family. Rough Francis is comprised of Bobby Hackney's 3 sons, Urian, Julian & Bobby Jr., along with Dylan Giambatista & Steven Williams. The band boasts anthemic punk rock songs, like their father & uncles made in the 70's. Although it may seem unfair to compare the Hackney children to their family, Rough Francis has provided the missing link to finding new fans & telling Death's story. Rough Francis has toured with Mos Def, OFF! & will be making their SXSW debut this year. They recently self-released a new album, Maximum Soul Power.

About A Band Called Death

Before Bad Brains, the Sex Pistols and the Ramones, there was Death. Formed in 1971 by three teenage brothers in Detroit, Michigan, the African-American group is widely acknowledged as being one of the first punk bands. After years of struggling with canceled contracts, increasing debts, inner family tragedy, and a controversial name that barred them from future success, Death sold off their instruments and disbanded with their recordings laying dormant in an attic for decades. After years of silence, Death’s moment finally arrived following unexpected demand from rabid internet fans and record collectors which ushered renowned appreciation and a swarm of national media attention that has now secured their place in the annals of rock history. Detroit-born Jack White
of The White Stripes said in the New York Times : “the first time the stereo played [Death] I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. When I was told the history of the band and what year they recorded this music, it just didn’t make sense. Ahead of punk, and ahead of their time.”
Following its world premiere at the 2012 Los Angeles Film Festival, A Band Called Death has received critical acclaim for its compelling music story as well as an unexpectedly emotional chronicle of familial camaraderie. Justin Lowe of The Hollywood Reporter said the film is “a moving testament to the enduring power of family ties and groundbreaking music.” And for TwitchFilm, A Band Called Death is “one of the best music documentaries to come out in years.”

Bleached are back with a brand new video for their first single "Next Stop." In typical Bleached fashion the video captures the carefree girls partying with their friends while taking a few motorcycle rides along the way. Nothing could be more fitting to the band's personality as the video reflects the fun, free-spirited and rebellious attitude the girls are known for.
On the heels of three well-received singles comes Ride Your Heart, the bombastic debut album by LA band, Bleached, out April 2 via Dead Oceans. Sisters Jennifer and Jessie Clavin match their ability to blend a mix of  freewheeling '77 punk with vintage sunny Southern California melodic rock and roll; creating blindingly bright hooks and dark heartfelt lyrics about love, loss, and the crazy fun moments in between. That's the goal: the sugary and sour, repurposed by two aggressively harmonic musicians and songwriters.

Raised up deep in the San Fernando Valley, their suburban isolation nurtured the girls creativity, as they started making their own music at a young age. Sneaking into punk shows over the hill in Hollywood, they grew up to become teenaged underground staples at all-ages Downtown DIY venue, The Smell.  Eventually signing to Kill Rock Stars and Post Present Medium, their all-girl punk band Mika Miko drew international acclaim, landing slots on tours with No Age, Black Lips, and The Gossip.
Bleached originally formed when the Clavin sisters resolved to continue working with each other upon the break up of Mika Miko. Plans were postponed when the sisters joined other bands. Jennifer relocated to New York and toured extensively. With Jennifer away, Jessie began to play with various bands in LA. But in the fleeting moments they found together back home, the songs that became Bleached's early 7" singles came together. Since Jennifer moved back to her hometown, Bleached now serves as both girls' chief creative outlet.
As a whole, the twelve tracks on Ride Your Heart reveal the many facets of Bleached's music in a delirious vortex of playful harmonies, tangled guitars, and golden noise. Each song brings a new element, while also imbibing the classic moods of bands as varied and iconic in nature as The Ramones and The Cars to The Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac. From the syncopated backbeat and two-part chorus of "Dead In Your Head,", the rolling riffs and sparkling melodies of "Searching Through The Past" and the pulsating energy and urgency of "Dreaming Without You" and "Outta My Mind", Bleached take you on a sweeping emotional roller coaster that churns and burns.
Ride Your Heart is a thrilling, beating, glorious wall of sound strong enough to withstand its own impact.

Noisey Premieres Brand New Scanners Track "Control" HERE

Noisey Premieres Brand New Scanners Track "Control" HERE
Video “State of Wonder” HERE
(free to share)

SXSW dates (more to be announced):
Wed 3/13 – Dim Mak showcase
Thu 3/14 – Soho Lounge @ 10pm

Later this year Love Is Symmetry album will come out on Dim Mak Records.

Supported: Late of the Pier, Laura Marling, Datarock, Devo, Air, The Horrors, Forward Russia, Asobi Seksu, Florence and the Machine, The Charlatans, Electric Six, These New Puritans, Juliette Lewis, Steve Aoki, Uffie and many more.

The Scanners story starts at a rehearsal studio in Camden Town London in 2005. Sarah and Mat had loads of songs they had been working on together whilst playing guitar in other people’s bands. When they met Amina and Tom it seemed the natural step to go and record these tracks, and so the first Scanners album ‘Violence is Golden’ was born. It was a homemade affair, recorded in bedrooms and rehearsal rooms, but it still started to attract some attention.

Through a strange set of circumstances Steve Aoki, head of LA label Dim Mak Records (Bloc Party, The Rakes, Gossip) heard one of the tracks and was hooked. On a visit to London he met up with the band and he promised to put out the record. So in 2006 Violence is Golden was released to much critical acclaim from sources as varied as the LA Times, Aversion and Perez Hilton. They played their second single "Lowlife" on NBC’s Carson Daly Show to a nationwide audience, the performance introduced by Ice Cube. They toured the West Coast and supported bands like Datarock, The Horrors, Forward Russia and The Rakes. The success from the album in America led to releases and tours in the UK and Europe. There they played the Rockness and Eurockéennes festivals and supported The Charlatans Air and Devo.

Submarine the second album was released in 2010. After the DIY approach to the first album, Scanners had decided to work with experienced producer Stephen Hague (New Order, Blur, Erasure) for the second. Recorded in part at Real World Studios and mixed in Stephen Hague’s shed, the second album’s higher production values made it popular with TV programmers. In fact, it is through TV shows such as Entourage, One Tree Hill, The Big C, Skins and more that Scanners’ music has managed to reach a wider audience. ‘Salvation’ the first single found many new fans thanks to its use in Gossip Girl, and "Lowlife" from the films Endgame and Mama’s Boy.

In 2011, after lots more touring and much soul searching Tom decided give up his drumstool. This was eventually taken over by French sticksmith Kilian, who joined in time to record on the third album Love is Symmetry. For their third album Scanners decided to go back to recording and producing themselves. Sarah and Mat have also been kept busy by the arrival of their son Flynn who was born in January 2012.

GLISS "Blur"

February Residency at Los Globos in Los Angeles
'Langsom Dans' Available Now via Modern Outsider
As they continue to topple alternative specialty radio charts, Los Angeles trio, Gliss, is pleased to release the 2nd of the live session videos, this one for their track "Blur," directed by Dominic Loverde. This comes from a series of five acoustic videos the band will be releasing via Under The Radar Magazine every Monday over a period of five weeks. As previously announced, watch the first video for the track "Into The Water," here. According to the band, the videos were "filmed on a cold and rainy California day far up in the mountains," and the chilled mood is evident through the cascading images and sounds. Gliss is finishing up their Monday February Residency at Los Globos in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, see the final date below as well as preliminary SXSW dates. Their newest album, Langsom Dans, was recently released via Modern Outsider.

Danish/American band Gliss makes a huge departure from their old sound on the new record Langsom Dans which is gathering comparisons to Beach House, Crystal Castles and Lower Dens. The LA based trio, consisting of Victoria Cecilia, Martin Klingman and David Reiss, pour their collective musical imaginations into recording timeless art pop with a precise Scandinavian texture that steps away from their previous work. The 12-track LP features heavy synths and electronic beats with Danish expatriate, Victoria Cecilia, stepping into the role as lead singer. The passionate vocal harmonies dictate the recordings with stories of coming out of the darkness into a new life, bringing to mind The XX, Portishead and Depeche Mode.

More on Still Corners Strange Pleasures:
Riding that insatiable kinesis over the last two years has resulted in Hughes, along with singing accomplice Tessa Murray, fashioning a devastating sophomore album, Strange Pleasures, which is surely destined to usher Still Corners to a deserved place at cerebral dream-pop’s high table. Where its predecessor soared on sugared layers of shoegazing-infused retro-futurism, Strange Pleasures proffers a leaner, more acute extrapolation of ’80s-suffused song and studio craft, navigating a sinuous trajectory between velveteen Angelo Badalamenti noir-pop torch song sophistication and ethereal Cocteau Twins beauty, with exquisite meanders through the glacial but mellifluous territory first mapped by Modern English, The Cure and The Passions, with nods along the way to cool, graceful detachment a la ’80s Euro avant-poppers such as Bernthøler and Virna Lindt (read more at Sub Pop).
What people are saying about Still Corners:
"Another dreamy, widescreen pop gem"  - ["Berlin Lovers" Track Post] Gorilla Vs. Bear
"Fireflies"... is no less beholden to the past-- only, this time, the band's drawing from the spangly, huge-sounding sounds of 1980s synth-pop. The change suits them well, as it's their most immediate and starry-eyed song to date, with Tessa Murray's multi-tracked vocals navigating their way through gorgeously empty terrain dotted with cymbal washes and gently pulsing synth tones.” - [“Fireflies” Track Review, "Best New Track”] Pitchfork
“Called “Fireflies,” the tune leans closer to 1980s dance music than previous atmospheric offering, Creatures Of An Hour. It’s still full of the band’s signature dreaminess.” - Under The Radar
“...A wonderful surprise” - [“Fireflies” Track Review] Refinery 29

Formed by Simon Bonney at the age of 16, Crime & The City Solution’s early performancesin Sydney had a big impact on key figures in the early Melbourne art-punk/post punk scene. In 1984, Bad Seed Mick Harvey shipped Bonney to England to form the London-based Crime. There they joined forces with the brilliant and ever-influential ex-Birthday Party guitarist Rowland S Howard, his brother Harry Howard on bass and Epic Soundtracks on drums. Two years later, after the release of an album and several EPs, and tours across Europe, the UK and US the London lineup reached its zenith. The band celebrated its finale with a historic swansong performance in Wim Wenders’ cinematic masterpiece ‘Wings of Desire’. Bonney then removed himself to Berlin, where a new phase of Crime would b egin.

Bonney has said his true voice and the definitive sound he sought emerged with the subsequent, Berlin-based incarnation of Crime & The City Solution. Comprised of 50% Berliner, the new collective consequently drew less from Melbourne post punk scene roots, and embraced a more explorative musical approach. The end result was a more experimental sound indicative of the musical inclinations of the current lineup: Einstürzende Neubauten’s Alex Hacke on guitar, ex-DAF/Liaisons Dangereuses electronic genius Chrislo Haas on vintage Korg patchbay synth, free jazz trio bassist Thomas Stern, with Australians Mick Harvey on drums and Bonney’s lyrical collaborator Bronwyn Adams on violin. This second Berlin manifestation released three studio albums and a live CD between 1986 and 199 1.

Following well received US and European tours at the end of 2012, Crime & The City Solution shared new tracks “The Colonel (Doesn’t Call Anymore)”, “Goddess” and the title track from the forthcoming American Twilight. With growing anticipation for the release of this new album, they are offering for download another new track, “My Love Takes Me There”.
