London quintet Still Corners usually spend their time perfecting gorgeous, shimmering pop songs, watching subtitled movies and being glacial heartbreakers. (Feature 2010)- Fader

...part '60s soundtrack music, part psych pop, and a big dose of motorik Kraut, as heard in a very Neu!-esque instrumental...Still Corners know exactly what they're aiming for and have pretty much hit the bullseye. (Show Review 2011) –Brooklyn Vegan

...the band displays its knack for the aforementioned atmospherics and for succinct indie-pop songwriting, but they’re unafraid to mix in other elements, evidenced by the utterly spooky waltz of ‘Velveteen’ and the krautrock-style propulsion of ‘Submarine’. – Paste Magazine

Real Estate announces more North American dates in January in addition to their already announced show at Terminal 5 opening for Girls -- in addition, the band will head to Australia and New Zealand in March. The band wraps up their 2011 touring with a brief run of 10 European dates.

The Duke Spirit "Bruiser"

“bold and atmospheric”
- USA Today
"The Duke Spirit are a band you want to root for, blessed as they are with an alluring frontwoman (Liela Moss) and good taste (drawing on everything from 1980s UK indie to northern soul to murder ballads), but also a willingness to burnish those outsider sources with a considerable sass and swagger to bring the masses on-side."
- Pitchfork
"[Bruiser] is another solid collection of big riffs, anthemic choruses and the powerhouse vocals of pistol Liela Moss."

Paul Weller "Sonik Kicks"

OUT ON MARCH 27th 2012

First Single “Around The Lake” Available On iTunes Next Week
November 22, 2012 - New York, NY - Enjoying a constant critical high and a never ending creative peak, Paul Weller continues to push the boundaries with his forthcoming new album Sonik Kicks, scheduled for release on March 27th 2012 on Yep Roc Records. The album is the follow up to the Mercury Prize Award nominated Wake Up The Nation and is also Paul’s eleventh solo album. Once again, it's his best yet.

For fans eager to hear a taste of what’s to come, RollingStone.com will be previewing the first single “Around The Lake” beginning today. The song will also be available for purchase on iTunes beginning next week.

Sonik Kicks features fourteen brand new tracks: “Green,” “The Attic,” “Kling I Klang,” “Sleep of the Serene,” “By the Waters,” “That Dangerous Age,” “Study in Blue,” “Dragonfly,” “When Your Garden’s Overgrown,” “Around The Lake,” “Twilight,” “Drifters,” “Paperchase,” and “Be Happy Children.” Both Noel Gallagher and Graham Coxon appear as special guests on the album.
Since Weller isn’t one to wait 20 years to be invited to perform his “classic” album, he has decided to do so now. Sonik Knicks will be performed in full at The Roundhouse in London, England on March 18th & 19th. Tickets go on sale 9AM on Friday Nov 25th. US shows are in the works for Weller and will be announced at a later date.

2012 will also mark two important anniversaries for Paul Weller. In 1977 (35 years ago) The Jam burst on to the music scene with their debut album In The City, which without question was one of the most important punk albums to ever be released. Since then Weller consistently changed and evolved his sound through his work with The Style Council and as a solo artist. It was 20 years ago in 1992 when Weller released his self-titled first ever solo album.

With Sonik Kicks Paul Weller once again shakes up his palate and stirs his influences anew. He mixes pop art punch with soulful communication; jazzy explorations into psychedelia and dub with razor-sharp melodies and abstract soundscapes with clear-eyed forest-folk.

MU.ZZ.LE will be released in the US on January 24th in CD, double 10" and as a special screenprinted A2 poster, strictly limited to 500 copies worldwide.

MU.ZZ.LE although short in length, is huge on messages: political, social and spiritual interpretations that define Gonjasufi as an artist. Written on the road, it was an outlet for him to challenge himself. It’s the response to all the adrenaline and aggression he felt traveling the world, it’s a spectrum of his creativity and a testimony of how one man’s passion and determination is often misunderstood as anger. “There’s a duality that exists and to deny it, is the biggest mistake”.

It’s a lonely journey that will take you through the innermost thoughts of Gonjasufi’s darkest hours. He recorded and mixed it on his own in his home studio surrounded by his family and the stark contrast of the Mojave Desert. The end product is his outlet and realization for who he is, a way for him to feel comfortable in his own skin again.

“MU.ZZ.LE was more like knowing that what comes out of the mouth of man, sets man free or defiles them, it was me guarding my words and my tongue. These words are less but I feel like I’m saying more.”

School of Seven Bells: Ghostory

New York, NY – School Of Seven Bells are back with their third release,
Ghostory, out February 28 on Vagrant Records/Ghostly International. The
highly-anticipated album finds the band’s lineup has evolved along with
the music; formerly a trio, they are now a duo: guitarist/producer Benjamin
Curtis and vocalist Alejandra Deheza.

Recorded in-between tours, Ghostory exemplifies a fervent progression of
School of Seven Bells (SVIIB) growth as artists, preserving the common
themes found on their last two releases but exposing them in different
fashions. The familiar ethereal and enigmatic tones are omnipresent,
surrounded by layers of influences from ‘80s pop, shoegaze and ambient
electronic sounds. However, Ghostory comes with a story in mind; the tale
of a young girl named Lafaye and the ghosts that surround her life.

“Everyone has ghosts”, says Alejandra Deheza; “They're every love you've
ever had, every hurt, every betrayal, every heartbreak. They follow you,
stay with you.” This detailed storytelling is evident from start to finish
on the record, weaving a tale that moves between a fervent synthesized
adventure and spacious lyrical euphoria. Tracks like “Love Play” and “Show
Me Love” create a hauntingly indelible atmosphere that grab attention
with the ambitious wordplay in the center of it all. Surrounding tracks
like “Lafaye” and “Scavenger” entice the vibe of previous School of Seven
Bells releases with their steadily dance-centric tempo and uplifting melodic
progressions. Ghostory flows seamlessly and effortlessly, a result of the
shared songwriting process.

“Ghostory is our most collaborative music to date,” describes Benjamin
Curtis, “Alley (Alejandra) and I have always written our music together,
but always independently and on our own time. We knew we wanted to do
something that was more sensual and spontaneous than anything we had
ever done before, and that meant writing together in a room, coming up with
ideas quickly and immediately reacting to what the other person was doing.”
Within Ghostory, the story of both Lafaye’s and the band’s journey will be

School Of Seven Bells formed in 2006 as a trio (including Claudia Deheza)
and released their debut full-length, Alpinisms, on Ghostly International in
2008. The group’s appeal grew exponentially, with their signature sounds
stemming from pieces of electronic subgenres and shoegaze bands before
them. By 2010, the group released the critically acclaimed Disconnect From
Desire on Ghostly International and Vagrant. Ghostory is truly their defining
work, beautifully crafted and haunting, with the story of Lafaye permeating
the psyche long after the music stops.

Smith Westerns: US Tour 2012

Smith Westerns announce 2012 tour dates

Last run of shows before band heads back into the studio to work on LP #3

VIDEO: "Weekend" -

Smith Westerns photographed by Angel Ceballos

If, light years from now, people ever want a snapshot of youth and young manhood in 2011, they need look no further than Chicago trio Smith Westerns, for to listen to their music is to experience vicariously the reckless thrills and irrepressible energy of a new generation, distilled to its purest and most vital essence. Hell, even the title of their lustrous sophomore album Dye it Blonde manages to capture its touchstone signifiers in three easy words, almost as much a playfully potent and authoritative slogan as it is a glorious statement of intent.

Even more appropriately, the beginnings of Smith Westerns were fomented while the trio of Cullen (guitar, lead vocals) and Cameron Omori (bass) and Max Kakacek (guitar) were still in high school. "We were all going to school together, so we started playing together," Cullen Omori says of their formative years in Kakacek's basement. "It was very punk rock, very straightforward stuff; we didn't really try that hard at the beginning. It was really raw, music-wise, stage-wise, everything, then we just started playing gigs around Chicago". Around this time, they were introduced to the halcyon era of glam-rock by one of Omori's parents' old friends, opening their eyes to David Bowie, Marc Bolan, T-Rex. The resultant self-titled debut - released in 2009 - was a revelation, with the trio showing remarkable facility in assimilating influences belying their age group, while also hardwiring them to a stomp and swagger entirely their own.

The album release won them instant buzz (with Todd Killings of Hozac Records even picking it up and giving it a proper release) and staunch support from the influential likes of Pitchfork and NME, and, in short order, they hit the road (with the likes of Girls and Los Campesinos!), left college, and signed with Fat Possum Records. "In late 2009, midway through touring, that's when we definitely felt like something was happening," Omori admits. "It felt like all our hard work was finally paying off. The tour we wound up with Girls, we were playing big venues, it was really exciting."

When it came to recording their next album however, the band - frustrated with the lo-fi tags that had been hastily and carelessly slapped on their debut ("I felt like we did the best we could with shitty equipment and no money, we weren't deliberately trying to sound like that") - were intent on pushing it to the next level as much as possible. "Fat Possum wanted us to record it super lo-fi but we knew we wanted something a lot bigger than the last album," Omori says. "They gave us this advance and we didn't even use it to pay ourselves at all - it all went towards making this record."

To that end, the band recruited producer Chris Coady, already feted for his work on some of the most canonised records of recent years, among them Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Fever to Tell, TV On the Radio's Dear Science and Beach House's Teen Dream. It was a union that was borne, quite simply, out of mutual admiration. "We wanted to work with someone whose work we liked also, and Chris has made so many records we really loved, like the Cold Cave record ("Love Comes Close"). Once he came in everything was pretty quick. We recorded it in 20 days and mixed it in 10 days. We knew what we wanted, and we just went for it."

What they wanted, to judge from the end result, was a lush, layered wall of sound, complete with back-up vocals, phasered guitars, rich synths, and an effortlessly universal, ageless, peerless feel. "It was definitely a conscious thing that we worked towards," Omori agrees. "For a while everything was so bare bones, lo-fi, badly recorded, and we wanted something that sounded kind of timeless - like music in the 60s. Really big choruses, really clean sounding. That was the kind of sound we were aiming for." Indeed, some of the unabashedly anthemic choruses and full-bodied melodies seem designed expressly to be sung along to in arenas, lighters aloft, with some songs even vaguely recalling another well-known stadium act from this side of the pond. "Yeah, I actually listened to a lot of Oasis while we were making the record," Omori confesses. "You can kind of hear it with songs like "Smile," where we rip them off a little bit."

Make no mistake; Dye It Blonde is an album destined to soundtrack hot, hazy summer days and a million house parties, driving along the open road with the top down or even rowdy nights in. When asked where the ideal place for Smith Westerns to play however, Omori plays it admirably cool. "We'd love to play at big arenas, eventually. But for now we'd just like to play in clubs to great crowds who know all the words to our songs. It's starting to happen now, I think."

“A spectacle impossible to turn away from. A monumentally ambitious movie. When I left the theatre, I felt light, rejuvenated and unconscionably happy.” -- J. Hoberman, Village Voice

Lars von Trier returns to the Cinefamily screen with his latest emotionally invigorating and conceptually groundbreaking opus! In this beautiful movie about the end of the world, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård) are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and brother-in-law John (Kiefer Sutherland). Despite Claire’s best efforts, the wedding is a fiasco, with family tensions mounting and relationships fraying. Meanwhile, a mystery planet called Melancholia is heading directly towards Earth. With this “ravishing allegory of depression and planetary destruction” (Andrew O’ Hehir, Salon.com), von Trier brings forth another soul-purging experience bound to leave you discussing, arguing over and savoring for weeks afterwards.

CAN "Tago Mago"

Spoon Records and Mute are happy to release the 40th anniversary edition of the classic Can album Tago Mago tomorrow, November 15, 2011.

The new edition of this genre-defying album comes packaged in the original UK artwork for the first time since 1971, and includes a bonus CD featuring 50 minutes of unreleased live material from 1972, remastered in 2011.

Tago Mago, the first album with Damo Suzuki on vocals, features the Can line up of Holger Czukay on bass, Michael Karoli on guitars, Jaki Liebezeit on drums and Irmin Schmidt on keyboards, and was recorded at Schloss Nörvenich in 1971, released later that year on United Artists.

Can’s influence is well known and far-reaching and the impact they made on music is felt today as keenly as it ever has been. They themselves have always been impossible to classify and reflecting this, the scope of artists who in recent years have cited Can as a major influence is varied. Of all the band’s oeuvre, Tago Mago has been most often cited as an influence for a host of artists including John Lydon, Radiohead, The Fall, Ariel Pink, F*ck Buttons, Sonic Youth, Factory Floor and Queens Of The Stone Age. Just last week Geoff Barrow (Portishead) mentioned Can as his favorite and most inspiring band ever (The Quietus).

Listen to ‘Bring Me Coffee Or Tea’, as featured on the OST for the 2010 film adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s novel Norwegian Wood here:

All 14 of Can’s studio albums have been newly cut to vinyl from the remastered tapes for release as a vinyl deluxe box set in early 2012. This will include CDs of all the albums, extensive booklets, an exclusive never released live album (vinyl only) and a newly remastered "Out Of Reach" previously unavailable! The vinyl deluxe box set will be available for pre-order at the beginning of October 2011.

The long awaited box set, The Lost Tapes, will be released in March 2012. Curated by Irmin Schmidt and Daniel Miller, and edited and compiled by Jono Podmore, this will include unreleased studio, soundtrack and live material.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Michael Karoli's death on the November 17 2011, Spoon Records will offer a Best Of Michael Karoli Edit for free download on their site www.spoonrecords.com.

Can was formed by ex-student of Stockhausen Irmin Schmidt, who, fired by the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa abandoned his career in classic music to form a group which could utilise and transcend all boundaries of ethnic, electronic experimental and modern classical music.
