Fun Fun Fun Fest

AUSTIN, TX (October 31, 2011) – Fun Fun Fun Fest and Pitchfork
announced today that the 6th annual festival in Austin, Texas will be
streaming live on pitchfork.com November 4 – 6, 2011. This will be the
first time ever that the music of Fun Fun Fun Fest, one of the most
progressive independent music festivals in the country, will be
available to those outside of Austin, and live.

Unlike other music festivals with similar live streams, Fun Fun Fun
Fest will present 4 separate streams with each tailored to different
musical tastes, streamed live on one of the most widely read music
websites in the world that reaches 3.3 million unique visitors each
month. Like the Fun Fun Fun Fest stage setups, each stream will
provide a different musical experience, from punk and metal to indie
rock and electronica, from bounce and hip hop to competitions and
comedy. Fans will be able to toggle the streams to cater to their
favorite styles of music, thanks to smart, the quirky, irreverent car.

When asked about the new partnership, Pitchfork had this to say: "Fun
Fun Fun Fest has absolutely become one of the great festivals in the
country, one that shares the same spirit of adventurous booking and
music- and fan-community focus that we bring to our own Pitchfork
Music Festival and our other events," said Pitchfork President Chris
Kaskie. "Pitchfork has produced a number of live streams in recent
years, and we're thrilled to be producing the Fun Fun Fun Fest live
stream this year, for the first time bringing the festival to music
fans outside of Austin."

To check out the Fun Fun Fun Fest live stream on Pitchfork, go to
www.pitchfork.com. The stream will begin on Friday, November 4th.

“We are thrilled to be working with Pitchfork and smart on bringing
what we do every year to more underground and progressive music fans
around the world. Pitchfork and Transmission have always focused on
many of the same acts, ideas, and trends – they are a like-minded
group of people and it’s exciting to see us working together in such
an innovative way. Plus, we get to bring a little more Slayer and
Turquoise Jeep to the PF pages, which is nice,” said Transmission
Principal James Moody.

To purchase tickets to the Fest, view the full lineup, and for further
updates, go to www.funfunfunfest.com. You can follow the fest on

The Soft Moon

Coming up on a year since their debut self-titled LP release, The Soft Moon presents Total Decay. Luis Vasquez continues to conjure a sound fueled tempest that intoxicates with its own post-apocalyptic dust in this new EP, which will be released on Halloween, fittingly. What began as a side-project has quickly gathered a cult following that has culled a spotlight in its own right, no longer in a cloaked corner.

After two stirring 7 inches and a full album, it was apparent that Vasquez is digging his own niche, an intimate well-spoken whisper, carrying a heavy load of synths that creep and drums that command an uncontrollable pull from within. This intimate peak into another world, Vasquez's mind, has garnered a number of comparisons to some of the most iconic and influential bands of the post-punk and krautrock movement.

"It's claustrophobic. It's hypnotic and exhilarating." - David Bevan, Spin Magazine

You've already heard lauded first single "Total Decay", so with the release of Total Decay just around the corner, the band has made a full stream of the EP available through Spin Magazine. Now you can hear for yourself the newest chapter of the The Soft Moon saga.

Not content just to let you hear the EP, the band has another pair of treats for you before the weekend, too.
You can now watch the haunting new video for "Total Decay", which premiered earlier today at Pitchfork. Additionally, Luis Vasquez curated a brilliant and haunting mix for Fact Magazine that just dropped this morning. It's 30 minutes of haunting cult classics from the likes of Chrome, 13th Chime, Cinema 90 and Sods perfectly suited for the holiday weekend. Watch the video for "Total Decay" and hear the band's Fact Mix below.

"Honestly, if you're into goth, post-punk, cold wave, industrial - any morbid music of the night, in fact - you need to get your teeth into this; it's a spotless, tip-top selection, and you can take that from people who really care about this stuff." - Fact Magazine

Antonioni In Color @ Cinefamily

(feat. brand-new 35mm print of "Red Desert"!)

Friday, November 4th - Sunday, November 6th

Cinefamily celebrates the release of Janus Films' brand-new 35mm print of Michelangelo Antonioni's 1964 classic Red Desert -- his first experiment with making a film in color -- with a three-day run of not only Red Desert, but three other 35mm picks of Antonioni's controversial, vivid and stunning color films from the '60s and '70s: Blow-Up, Zabriskie Point and The Passenger!

Red Desert
Antonioni’s panoramas of contemporary alienation were decade-defining artistic events, and Red Desert, his first color film, is perhaps his most epochal. This provocative look at the spiritual desolation of the technological age -- about a disaffected woman, brilliantly portrayed by Antonioni muse Monica Vitti, wandering through a bleak industrial landscape beset by power plants and environmental toxins, and tentatively flirting with her husband’s coworker, played by Richard Harris -- continues to keep viewers spellbound. With one startling, painterly composition after another, Red Desert creates a nearly apocalyptic image of its time, and confirms Antonioni as cinema’s preeminent poet of the modern age. Dir. Michelangelo Antonioni, 1964, 35mm, 120 min.

Fri., Nov. 4, 4:45PM - Red Desert (special weekday matinee!) NOTE: Admission to this show also gains ticketholders admission to the following Friday double feature.
Fri., Nov. 4, 7:30PM - Blow-Up + Red Desert

Black Bananas

Jennifer Herrema announces new project - Black Bananas - new LP due in Jan. 2012 on Drag City
Black Bananas photographed by STEVEN PERILLOUX

RTX are splitting into Black Bananas!!! The fruit is ripe and the bread will be FRESH.

After three albums under the name RTX, Jennifer Herrema and her bunch decided to flip the script, to kick open the doors of perception a little bit . See,RTX was not Royal Trux, not a metal band, not a 70's bar band and not a toxic substance; RTX was something, all of those things and none of them and way more, including Black Bananas bubbling in a witchy cauldron of their own herbaceousbrew. The title of a song on their RaTX album detailed a bit of the recipe, taking elements often tossed aside or thrown all the way out and combining them into something new and worthwhile...a new strain of the almighty green - to feed and elevate the hungry ones.

"I'm your garbage collector

I'll turn your trash to gold

What you cast off is what I hold,

End loafs of bread, black bananas and broken crackers

Scratched records, too dark pictures and torn jeans

All the shit that rips at the seams"

Black Bananas is set for the next all-inclusive rock and roll crusade, the one that includes even and especially all the shit you don't like, woven into all the shit you can't live without. This has been the name of Jennifer's game from day one; she owns the blueprints and if you don't know by now, don't even bother to Google it, cuz understanding is an investment not an action. Jennifer Herrema is not schizophrenic nor does she don many hats. She is simply a singer and simultaneously, a pioneer of comprehensive non-exclusive opposition rock, and Black Bananas is the latest addition to the oeuvre.

Brian Mckinley, Kurt Midness, Jaimo Welch, and Nadav Eisenman have been ripping and running with Jennifer since 2002, when one by one, they gathered serendipitously, borne by curiosity and the courage to be part of something new. Each passing RTX record saw them wrapped ever tighter in the burgeoning tongue of their own creation. Now, uttering their twisted slang fluently as a unified dialect, they emerge as Black Bananas.

If you wanna hedge (-fund) your bets its best to get out in front of this new national currency they are creating with Black Bananas. These are the notes of the future; with Jennifer at the helm their worth will grow exponentially. Invest!

Black Bananas first album Rad Times Xpress IV runs the gamut from gnarly odes to reality TV in songs like "My House" to future electric metallic GoGo sounds all conceived with scraps of influence from Jennifer's childhood passions zig-zagged with other currents out there, creating a sound that will take you to a specific place that only Black Bananas know how to find.

Most of all, Black Bananas is the new band in town - and they're fucking righteous.

The Blue Angel Lounge

This past Spring saw the live US debut of Germany's Blue Angel Lounge, in support of their second album, Narcotica'. Due to overwhelming demand, 8mm Musik and Cargo Distribution are making the band's stunning self-titled debut available in the US for the first time on October 25th.

"...shadowy, tactile and frequently beautiful." Blurt Magazine

"...baptized by the 4AD side of things with a side order of shoegaze. There are even a few plays taken from the Joy Division playbook. In comparison to their contemporaries, this record sticks out like a goth at a Justin Bieber concert." The Agit Reader

"Profound and opulent, Narcotica is a stupendous album that will keep resonating in your mind, challenges many older bands and substantiates the singularity of the band. May there be many other adventures and pilgrimages in the future…" Reverberation

A Brief History:

Founded in 2006 by Nils Ottensmeyer and Dennis 'Mel' Melster, the band completed their self-titled debut in 2008, of which 500 vinyl copies were self-released. One of the copies made it into the hands of Will Carruthers of Spacemen 3, who subsequently passed it on to a friend at 8MM Musik. The band were signed shortly after.

An appearance at the UK's Dream Machine Festival in 2008 led to the track 'The God', from their debut, being included on the UK neo-psych compilation 'Open Your Mind', later pronounced DIY Compilation Of The Week by the BBC in 2009

Following their first ever show in Berlin in 2009, Anton Newcombe was impressed enough to offer to help with production, and, with his studio wizardry and the band's already stellar songwriting and musical talent, 'Narcotica' was recorded in under two weeks. It was released in the US last year and received rave reviews.

Blue Angel Lounge completed a 9 show tour of the US earlier this year, which featured a standout performance at the
Austin Psych Fest. Currently in the studio working on new material, they hit the road again in September with an appearance at the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg, and embark on a German, Austrian and Swiss tour later this month. They also recently supported Interpol, A Place To Bury Strangers, Asteroid #4 and Crystal Stilts on select German dates. US tour dates forthcoming.

The Blue Angel Lounge debut album will be available digitally and on CD.

Interview by Alexander Laurence / Photo by Angel Ceballos

Anika aka Annika Henderson used to be a political journalist and travel back and forth between Bristol and Berlin. She also went to college in Wales at some point and organized shows there and was a DJ too. As she was booking and promoting bands for clubs in Wales , Anika decided to try out for a band Beak> that was looking for a singer. The fellows in Beak> decided to stay instrument and to create a whole new record with Anika. They recorded the Anika in twelve days with no overdubs. They picked a bunch of cover songs including “Terry” by Lynn Ripley, “End of The World” by Skeeter Davis, “Masters of War” by Bob Dylan, “I Go To Sleep” by The Kinks, and “Yang Yang” by Yoko Ono. There were a few original songs like “No One’s There” and more. The stark confrontational style was very apparent. Anika was in the US early this year as a DJ. But now she is touring with a full band and even playing some festivals like ATP and Moog Fest. I got to speak with Anika right before she started her tour in America.

AL: How are the shows going?

Anika: We had one so far at Le Poisson Rouge in New York. It has been going reasonably well. We are on are way to Princeton. We are playing with Factory Floor and Dirty Beaches. We added a show at Glasslands since we are coming back to NYC anyway. We have toured extensively in Europe. We played a lot of festivals in Spain, France, and Switzerland. It’s harder to come over here because you have to deal with visa issues.

AL: How has the response been to music? Is there much difference in playing France and America?

Anika: It depends on what people like. You get cultural differences across France the same way you do across America. It will be interesting to see what happens when we play different parts of America. It was a surprise to see how exciteable New Yorkers were the other night. We will see how the LA shows goes.

AL: I heard that people were yelling out between songs in New York?

Anika: Yes. It was mental. It was crazy.

AL: When many English bands come over here, it’s often singers like Coldplay and Keane. It’s like emotional English ballads…. When someone doesn’t do something like that….

Anika: Actually some of our songs are based on stuff that Keane and Coldplay do. We want that kind of atmosphere. It’s great.

AL: You take these emotional songs and give them a disaffected treatment. It’s almost like Brechtian theater?

Anika: Yeah. There was a lot of thinjgs that I didn’t want to do when I started playing with the guys in Beak>. As an ex-promoter at clubs it would annoy me watching bands with spangly catsuits and guitars. I didn’t want to that sort of thing. It’s apparent to anyone who has heard the songs. I would probably not get through an X-Factor audition. But that doesn’t make it any less credible than a pop star. It’s like if you put Andy Warhol into a painting competition, he probably wouldn’t have won at the time. If there was someone who didn’t neccesarily replicate reality, it doesn’t make them any less credible or acceptable, because they are doing something different.

AL: Are you inspired by a specific period in music?

Anika: No. There are many good records coming out now. There was about ten years of really boring music. The last ten years has been quite predicable. It’s been safe and comfortable in the US and also England. The music was very bland.

AL: Was it a problem of copycats? Many successful bands would come out like Oasis and Libertines, and then there would be several copycats.

Anika: It was interesting when Oasis first came out. That was the 1990s. Blur and Oasis came out before the whole Britpop thing. They were challenging what was going on. They were mooning people at the Brit Awards. Then came the whole Lad culture of indie music and the whole point of it got lost. It got hijacked by people with nothing to say. There is always room for pop music. But all these people like Simon Cowell come along with the perfect recipe for music. When the experts come in with their ideas of pop perfection, it becomes predictable.

AL: So if I understand it right: Beak> was already a band. They were looking for a lead singer and you came in?

Anika: Then it became it’s own thing. It was a strange scenario. I wasn’t looking to form a band. I had written a load of lyrics. My friend called me up and said this band in Bristol is looking for a singer, and I should go and meet them. I didn’t know what Beak> was and I didn’t know Geoff Barrow.

AL: So when you first played with them, they started playing, and you did your vocal bit, did they look up and say “What the hell is this?”

Anika: That was what made it good. I just did the vocals like I would do when no one was around. They didn’t question it or try to understand it. They just said “great” and “let’s do another one.” That was nice. That is why it worked so well. We would just walk in and record it and walk out. We didn’t talk about it. I didn’t listen to it for a year. I was also jamming with another band in Cardiff. I had written loads of songs. It didn’t work and they didn’t understand what I was doing.

AL: How did you decide what songs you were going to do?

Anika: We would get to the studio. We would look through some songs on youtube. We would pick a few songs that we could mess with. We would print out the lyrics. We would try out several songs and record the songs. At the time I didn’t think it would get released. I didn’t do it in a way where I was thinking “People are going to love this.” We were experimental.

AL: How did you write songs together?

Anika: We listened to the track once. And everyone interpreted it in their own way. The whole point for me was I was against the way people were releasing records. It was a rejection of the way records were recorded and marketed. Why change the lyrics if you are going to distract people? Why do a cover song when you got the original to refer to? If I used all my lyrics if would have scared people away. The record might have not been noticed. It’s funny how everyone dwells on the cover songs. The amount of bands now that rip off songs and don’t declare that they do. It was more obvious what is going on in our band.

AL: So you were in the dark about the album for a year?

Anika: Yeah. I moved to Berlin right after that and I didn’t think about it very much. And then Geoff sent me some artwork to okay. I thought: “What is this? You are going to release a record?” Now it’s out there and we are playing shows. It has happened very fast.

AL: Are you doing another record?

Anika: Yeah. We are working on some new songs at the moment.

AL: Do you still DJ?

Anika: Sometimes. I think there is a lot of music that people forget about. It’s important to remind people about certain movements.

AL: Are you still doing journalism?

Anika: I have given up my job as a political journalist. We have been touring for a year. I don’t have as much time to make updates or read The Economist. I was living in Berlin. I have written about all about policy reform.

HERE'S THE BEAK> INTERVIEW FROM LAST YEAR: http://portable-infinite.blogspot.com/2010/10/beak-interview.html

The Passion of Joan of Arc

……..guitar harmonics and pitch-bending synthesiser sounds chase the expressive eyes of Joan, while the harp's gentle passages remind us she is human. The way the excellent ensemble take us to its finale, raising dynamics as well as the score's dissonance, ensures its horror continues in the mind long afterwards.”
-The Guardian

"The music also heightened the film’s remarkable intensity, building in pitch with guitar feedback and pounding drums as the confrontation between Joan and the Church reached its peak. By the end, as Joan was engulfed in fire, it was as if the Furies were bearing down on the auditorium."
-Financial Times
"Passion’s visual achievement is so great that it can overwhelm a feeble accompaniment, but the duo’s enthralling score rises to the challenge – and a standing ovation testified to the audience’s appreciation."-The Spectator

"The orchestral ensemble, which featured both Utley and Gregory – the latter dropping in delicious Moog-style synthesiser effects – amped up the power of the cinematic experience, making it vital and contemporary." -The Telegraph

Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival will present a screening of Carl Theodor Dreyer’s 1928 cinematic masterpiece The Passion of Joan of Arc, accompanied by the live performance and U.S. premiere of a musical score created by renowned musicians Adrian Utley and Will Gregory of the groups Portishead and Goldfrapp, respectively, on Saturday, October 29 at 7:30pm in Alice Tully Hall.
The new score for The Passion of Joan of Arc, led by British conductor Charles Hazlewood, is Utley’s and Gregory’s first collaboration on a live score, written for an eclectic ensemble comprising six electric guitars, a choir, harps, percussion, horns, and keyboards. Although both artists come from substantial classical music backgrounds - Gregory as a former saxophonist for the London Sinfonietta and Utley as a film and TV composer - their unique aesthetic focuses on guitar harmonics and pitch-bending synthesizers. The music incorporates extended techniques for instruments and voices, providing a powerful landscape for this remarkably moving silent film about the last days of Joan of Arc.
Made in France, the original film was released at the close of the silent era and offers a powerful portrait of psychological torment and martyrdom as it follows Joan’s trial, imprisonment, torture, and execution. The original film negative was lost for decades and only discovered by accident in the cupboard of a Norwegian mental institution in 1981. The new print, made by Artificial Eye Film distributors, was premiered with the new score in 2010 at Colston Hall in the U.K.

Plaid Announces North American Tour Dates

New Album Scintilli Out Now On Warp Records

Download: "Missing" from Scintilli

Listen: Plaid Fact Magazine Mix

Since the release of 2003’s Spokes, Plaid have scored two of Michael Arias’ award-winning films, released Greedy Baby, an ambitious audio-visual collaboration, continued to perform around the world (including a landmark performance at Warp Records’ 20th anniversary celebrations) – and just recently released their latest album Scintilli. Plaid just announced a North American tour in support of Scintilli which includes stops at NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge and Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre.

Latin in origin, the word Scintilli can be translated as ‘I am many sparks’. A self-affirming mantra Plaid (aka Ed Handley and Andy Turner) claim to chant for two hours every morning, before starting work in their newly built studio in North London. Every beat of the work has been carefully crafted: they’ve calculated that each beat has taken approximately one day to construct - from the announcement of the laying down of the first foundation beat in early 2009, to the rendering of the final decay earlier this year. ‘This labour intensive process will guarantee long lasting pieces of music that can withstand the restless tensions placed upon them by modern playback devices’, they insist.

“There’s a fierce intelligence working here” - Q

Scintilli is Plaid’s most confident-sounding album to date and certainly among their best work.” - Exclaim

“Perhaps an explanation for the beautiful noise emanating from Scintilli, Ed Handley and Andy Turner’s ninth album, can be found in their attention to detail.” - Mojo

“bold and atmospheric” – USA Today

“The jagged-riffed, swaggering ‘Procession’ is as darkly pouty as ever, the sprawling psych of ‘Bodies’ admirably ambitious, the sultry, charming ‘Don’t Wait’ irresistible. ‘Bruiser’ proves they’re still putting up a hell of a fight.’ - NME

“The London quintet have raised their game, with something a whole lot more classy, salvaging them from the landfill indie chute.” – Clash Music

Band Of Skulls Sign To Vagrant Records In The U.S.

New Single To Be Released December 6th

'The Devil Takes Care Of His Own' From Forthcoming Album Out 2012

New Video For Track Online Now!

October 11, 2011 - Band of Skulls have announced today that they have signed with Vagrant Records for the upcoming release of their anticipated and as yet untitled second album. This album will be the follow-up to their debut album Baby Darling Doll Face Honey which was universally embraced by the U.S. media with early supporters at Entertainment Weekly naming them "Your Next Favorite Band." The band's live show was also repeatedly highlighted by the likes of SPIN (Best of Coachella) and Rolling Stone (Best of SXSW) amongst many others.

Following the success of Baby Darling Doll Face Honey, the band retreated to a studio in Norfolk UK to begin writing the follow-up. They returned to their home studio in Southampton to start the recording which they completed in Wales at Rockfield Studios. The album was produced by Ian Davenport (Supergrass, Badly Drawn Boy) and mixed by Nick Launay (Grinderman, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arcade Fire). The album will be released in 2012 through the band's label in conjunction with Vagrant on Electric Blues Recordings/Vagrant Records.

Prior to that on December 6th, the band will release the first single 'The Devil Takes Care Of His Own' off of the new album which will be available as a download at iTunes and other digital download stores.

Fans can click here now to see a rather unique kung-fu themed video which has been produced to accompany the single:

This Week Behind Reworked / Remixed Double CD

"...the biggest breakout of Coachella 2011 was Danish electronic artist Trentemøller...Coachella's ultimate underdog, stunning all onlookers and becoming the toast of the fest, with Twitter absolutely exploding with raves and recommendations by his set's conclusion...the biggest revelation of the entire weekend. Perhaps he'll be headlining Coachella in 2012." - Yahoo! Live Review (Coachella 2011)

Danish electronic artist Anders Trentemøller will once again join forces with his full live band, kicking off a North American fall tour this week in support of his forthcoming double CD, Reworked / Remixed. Joined by guitarist/bassist Mikael Simpson, guitarist Lisbet Fritze, drummer Jakob Høyer, and vocalists Josephine Philip and Marie Fisker, this set of dates sees Trentemøller revisiting the major markets he circulated through on his sensational coast to coast debut US tour this past spring, of which UR Chicago said he and hsi band "proved that they can dominate any space they take on." This tour will also include a special NYC performance at Webster Hall on 10/14 featuring expert theremin player Dorit Chrysler and Coco Sumner (I Blame Coco).

Reworked / Remixed will be released on Trentemøller's own label In My Room and is due out on November 8th. The double CD features UNKLE, I Blame Coco, Depeche Mode, Modeselektor with Thom Yorke, Efterklang, Mew, Kasper Bjørke and many more, celebrating some of the producer's favorite remixes he's crafted for other artists, as well as his own songs that other musicians have reworked.

Featuring three-dimensional layers, cinematic lighting and unique special effects, Trentemøller's ever-evolving live performances were lauded at this year's SXSW, Ultra Music Festival, and Coachella, resulting in Yahoo! Music saying he was the "biggest breakout of Coachella 2011...perhaps he'll be headlining Coachella in 2012." The full lineup consists of:
Jakob Høyer / drums, Marie fisker / vocal, guitar, Mikael Simpson / guitar, bass, Lisbet Fritze / guitar and Josephine Philipp / vocal (only on the West coast). To get an idea of what to expect on this tour, watch the incredible live video of his performance of "Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider Go!!!" in front of 50,000 fans at Roskilde Festival.
