Alessi's Ark: US TOUR 2010

Alessi’s Ark First U.S. Release Soul Proprietor EP Out On Bella Union 10/19
Supporting Paul Weller In L.A. / Showcasing During CMJ
“Prepare to be enchanted by Alessi’s Ark’s whispy, breathy vocals and ethereal folk songs.”
– The Independent
“Alessi's fantastical music seems largely untainted by the world around her.” - Paste
Haw River, NC (September 27, 2010) - Created in a series of short sessions at London’s analogue-friendly, and satisfyingly dusty recording studios, the ‘Soul Proprietor’ EP is a charming record by this fresh, young British voice.

The musical avatar of Alessi Laurent-Marke, Alessi’s Ark might have begun as homework but her quirky, blade-sharp folk pop is mature far beyond her years. Required to play an instrument in school, Laurent-Marke took up the drums at age 11 and by her 17th birthday she had quit school to focus on music, become a Myspace sensation and signed with Virgin Records.
Her debut album Notes from the Treehouse (a special edition EP was produced by friend Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons) was produced by Bright Eyes/Monsters of Folk member and Rilo Kiley producer Mike Mogis, and was released on Virgin in 2009. Alessi reaped word-of-mouth support and due acclaim, touring relentlessly and receiving plaudits for some stand out appearances at South by Southwest in Texas. Following parting ways with Virgin, Alessi signed with UK indie label Bella Union in 2010. In turns stark and cinematic, Alessi’s new EP Soul Proprietor signals a new beginning for an already unusually experienced young artist.
The new recordings that comprise the Soul Proprietor EP are another huge leap forward for this 20 year old artist. Entering into Alessi’s mesmerising mindset is to lose oneself in a whirlwind of the surreal. In an industry where taking is often the only realistic option, Alessi’s almost folkloric generosity sees her working tirelessly for the promotion of others. As an impassioned former fanzine editor, her support and championing of new artists warmed, humbled and fascinated the community of musicians that surrounded Mogis and Bright Eyes in Nebraska while recording her first full length.
Still very fresh on US soil, Alessi will be performing several shows in New York City during CMJ and then moving to the west coast to open for Paul Weller and play a few gigs of her own.

Chapterhouse

CHAPTERHOUSE ANNOUNCE FIRST US SHOWS IN 15 YEARS THIS FALL
KINDRED SPIRIT, ULRICH SCHNAUSS, JOINS AS SUPPORT

After a hiatus of nearly 15 years, seminal early 90s, UK guitar noise band Chapterhouse have agreed to temporarily reform for a limited number of live shows and will be joined by recent collaborator, Ulrich Schnauss. Following two sold out shows in London, England and a tour of Japan in April 2010 the band are about to embark on their first North American tour since 1994. Encouraged by the new wealth of current bands referencing Chapterhouse as an influence and the new generation of music fans these groups have brought with them, the band feel that this is a perfect time to offer fans, old and new, the opportunity to see them play live one last time. Ulrich will be supporting at all the shows and is also performing with Chapterhouse on keyboards.

“We’re very pleased to have Ulrich along with us on this tour, it makes for a perfect symmetry. We have also found some great local bands for all these shows that will really compliment what are going to be some great nights.”

Chapterhouse formed in Reading, England in 1987. After a period of playing regularly around London and touring with Spacemen 3, they signed to Dedicated Records in 1989. The band released their first 3 EPs 'Freefall', 'Sunburst' and 'Pearl' which topped the UK independent music charts throughout 1991. They followed this with their first album 'Whirlpool' which reached #23 in the UK album charts and another EP 'Mesmerise' in October 1991. The band ended the year with their first tour of North America and Japan.
Chapterhouse released their second album 'Blood Music' in 1993 and followed this with their second North American tour in 1994. The group disbanded in 1995 but have remained good friends and continue to work on other projects together.

Alongside these Chapterhouse dates, Simon has been playing with reformed Slowdive spin off Mojave 3 and Ashley continues to play with his current band Tunng.

The Watson Twins

The Watson Twins
Interview by Alexander Laurence

Chandra and Leigh Watson were born on March 28, 1975 in Oklahoma, and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. They attended the University of Evansville then moved to Silverlake, California in 1997. The Watson Twins released their debut EP, Southern Manners (2006), almost simultaneously with Rabbit Fur Coat, their collaboration with Jenny Lewis. They have since released two more albums: Fire Songs (2008) and Talking To You, Talking To Me (2010).

The Watson Twins are one of the best Los Angeles bands, and I got to speak to Chandra Watson this month, right before another major American tour. They will be playing at the Bootleg Theater on September 10th.

AL: You have played a lot of shows this year. You just finished a tour.

CW: We just finished a month-long tour. We did a headlining tour, and one week with Brandi Carlile. We are in LA for ten days, and then we start a tour with Laura Veirs. We are enjoying a little time off before we go on the road for another three weeks.

AL: You didn’t play the Lilith Fair?

CW: No. It’s interesting. We just did this tour with Brandi Carlile and we are about to play some shows with Laura Veirs. It is the first time we have opened for another female. It’s weird. You go on tour and there are plenty of female fronted bands, but it’s not as saturated as it seems. We have played around for four years solid, and have always played with men. This time out we tried to seek out other female fronted bands to tour with. We figured if people were open to people like Brandi Carlile or Laura Veirs, they would automatically be open to our music.

AL: How did you find all the guys who play with you now?

CW: These are people who we have met in Los Angeles and played with over the years in different forms. They are friends. We have picked people who we knew and could live with for a month. Our drummer has played drums with us for a few years, and he played drums on a few tracks on the new record. Our producer, Russell Pollard, also plays drums. Russell and J. Soda play on the record. We have some new guys touring with us now.

AL: Did you try to create a cohesive album or is it more a collection of moods?

CW: Leigh and I write separately and we come together. So the beginning process of the record is us playing songs to each other. We can then weed out the weaker songs. This record did feel more cohesive than the other records, just because the way we went about it. We did more planning on this record. It’s more based on the songs. My sister and I have a lot of different influences. We saw Janelle Monae and Erykah Badu play at the Greek. We love Erykah Badu, and the new Laura Veirs record. We listen to a lot of Carole King.

AL: How many songs did you write?

CW: We had forty songs. We went in the studio with seventeen songs, and ended up with twelve on the record. Sometimes it’s better to have a lot of songs, because when you are working on the arrangements and the recordings, something doesn’t work out. The previous albums we didn’t have as many songs.

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti announced today a Nov / Dec tour co-headlining with Brazilian Tropicalia legends and psychedelic pioneers Os Mutantes. This is in addition to previously announced tour dates this Fall with another band of kindred spirits, The Flaming Lips - as well as a handful of headlining Haunted Graffiti dates.

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti's 4AD debut record, Before Today, consists of twelve tracks (including the single "Round And Round") and was released worldwide on June 8th 2010 on CD, LP and digital formats.

Six months in the making, Before Today was recorded in part in Encino at the House of Blues (once Tito Jackson's home studio) with Sunny Levine (Quincy Jones' grandson) and Rik Pekkonen (Bill Withers, Seals & Crofts, Bread) as well as at the band's home studios. The result is a beguiling mix of glam rock, West Coast funk and Merseybeat harmonies with a high-production sheen; a contrast to the corroded bedroom recordings that have fomented a fervent cult following over the past decade.

The outfit now consists of reclusive pop surrealist Ariel Pink (vocals) alongside Tim Koh (bass/vocals), Kenny Gilmore (guitar/vocals) Joe Kennedy (guitar) and Aaron Sperske (drums/vocals).
