JOSEPH ARTHUR & PETER BUCK OF R.E.M. TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM ARTHUR BUCK VIA NEW WEST RECORDS JUNE 15th, 2018

JOSEPH ARTHUR & PETER BUCK OF R.E.M. TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM
ARTHUR BUCK VIA NEW WEST RECORDS JUNE 15th, 2018

FIRST EVER NORTH AMERICAN TOUR GOES ON SALE TODAY

Joseph Arthur and Peter Buck of R.E.M. fame will release their debut album, Arthur Buck, on June 15th, 2018 via New West Records. The 11-song set was produced by Joseph Arthur and mixed by Tchad Blake (U2, Pearl Jam, The Black Keys) with all of its songs co-written by the duo.  Today, their first ever North American tour launching on September 7th in Seattle, WA goes on sale (please see dates and ticket links below).  In addition to Joseph Arthur and Peter Buck, the live band will consist of Scott McCaughey (Minus 5, Young Fresh Fellows, R.E.M., The Baseball Project) on bass, Linda Pitmon (Minus 5, Filthy Friends, The Baseball Project) on drums, and Gregg Foreman (Pharmacy, Delta 72, Cat Power) on Keyboards.

Earlier this week, Billboard Magazine premiered the album track “Forever Waiting."  Of the song, Joseph Arthur states, “‘Forever Waiting’ was one of the initial songs we wrote together in Mexico.  One of the first four and to me then, it was evidence of a blooming chemistry. ‘You call it weakness to sell your love across the wall.  But now all your secrets.  Won’t cover up the way you crawl.’  Those somewhat esoteric lines remind me of what it’s like to be an artist and the strangeness of profiting off the damage of your life.  But they are abstract enough to create other meanings.”  Hear it HERE.  Rolling Stone previously premiered their video for the album’s first single, “Are You Electrified?.”  The Dean Karr directed clip was shot in Oregon and Rolling Stone said, “Between clean guitar licks, Arthur’s gritty vocals impart a message of hope.  Arthur described the new track as ‘a song about holding onto your dreams in a world that makes it challenging to do so...to inspire with positive energy and momentum to do as the song says and ‘make this world a better place.’”  NPR Music also previously premiered the album’s lead off track, “I Am The Moment,” which marries Buck’s sharply-strummed acoustic guitar chords to an electronic beat, with all manner of sonic ephemera ping-ponging around in the background.  NPR stated, “The sparks fly freely in the song 'I Am the Moment': a classic chiming Buck guitar lick sets up a vocal that's both gritty and cosmically gleeful, enlivened by a handclap-sharp rhythm track.”  Arthur Buck will be available as an Indie Retail Translucent Blue & Red Split Colored Vinyl Edition, a limited edition Autographed Barnes & Noble Vinyl Variant, Standard Black Vinyl, Compact Disc, and across digital platforms. The album is currently available for pre-order via New West Records

The collaboration was established after the pair met up in Mexico near the end of 2017. They wrote eight songs in three days and on the fourth day, performed them for a handful of Baja locals near Buck’s home. Arthur says, “My first thought was, ‘Hey, I’ll get Peter to play acoustic guitar on some of the stuff I’m working on!’ So I started showing him songs. But he was like, ‘That’s cool. Now check this out.’ And he started playing chords and whatnot. So I put my guitar down and began singing over his changes, and it was magical. It was easy. And these great songs just started popping out.”

Since their initial meeting, the pair steadily worked on their debut with basic tracks recorded at Type Foundry Studio in Portland, OR with Arthur producing at his studio in Brooklyn, NY. The vibrant collection captures the spontaneity at the heart of the project - right down to the 1-2-3-4 count off from Buck that begins the proceedings - with sounds and styles mashed together in a unique and interesting manner. “It was all new songs, and it was spontaneous,” Buck says. “And the great thing about working that way was that it didn’t have to be anything in particular. It was liberated from any expectation. It was free.”

The two musicians have a history that stretches back decades; among other pairings, Arthur opened many shows for R.E.M. in the early 2000s, while Buck has backed Arthur on numerous occasions. Both Arthur and Buck have said that these songs differ from their other recording projects and while speaking with Rolling Stone, Buck said “It was really spontaneous and kind of magical in its own way, as [being in Mexico] we were kind of disconnected from everything.” Arthur added, “All of a sudden it was like I had this musical partner and friend, and that relieved the music of the burden of the self, if that makes sense.” Of his new bandmate, Buck stated, “Joe is going through that searching period we all go through in life. And those experiences he’s having make this a very forward-looking record, lyrically. The music has a questing kind of feel. We were making it up as we went along.”

WINSTON SMITH: “Punk Art Surrealist” Brings "Graphic Anarchy" to London

WINSTON SMITH: “Punk Art Surrealist” Brings "Graphic Anarchy" to London | Orbital Comics

WINSTON SMITH IN LONDON THIS SATURDAY -  ONE NIGHT ONLY!
A master of "hand-carved" collage, Winston has been crafting his thought-provoking art since the 1970s.
After being abroad for nearly seven years, Winston returned -to America in 1976 and was astonished by the complacency the American public exhibited toward the predominate role of corporate enterprise.
He took notice of the safe and "happy" icons of 1940s & 1950s magazine ads and created politically charged works of art that challenge the viewer to confront the incongruities and political paradoxes of modern society.
Not long after, his collaborations with punk legends Dead Kennedys became widely known and his art beloved for its humor and social commentary. His album covers, inserts and flyers for the band served as a beacon for burgeoning political artists and culture critics.

His technique of cutting out by hand and and gluing each individual element has inspired a generation of artists. In 1981, his political shock piece, Idol (originally conceived in 1977) brazenly adorned the Dead Kennedys album, "In God We Trust, Inc." That album, banned in England and condemned by the American religious right, landed Smith and Dead Kennedys a permanent spot in the punk culture "Hall of Shame."
Even more infamously, the "DK" logo that Smith designed for the band remains the international symbol of protest against authoritarianism, and has been carved on school desks and park benches, spray-painted on walls, immortalized in sidewalk cement and tattooed on skin all over the world since its conception in 1980.
Smith is also responsible for the famous Alternative Tentacles logo for frontman Jello Biafra's record label.

The visual left hooks that Smith threw into the underground punk scene in the 1970s and `80s have since impacted a much wider audience world wide. He has designed over 50 album covers for such bands and cultural icons as Green Day, Burning BridesBen Harper, George Carlin and many more...

Calpurnia Release New Single "Greyhound"

Calpurnia, the 4-piece band from Vancouver led by Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things and It have today released a new single from their debut EP Scout, out June 15 on Royal Mountain Records. "Greyhound" is available for purchase and streaming HERE.

After the release of their debut single "City Boy" in March, Calpurnia have been making waves, with the song being streamed more than 5 million times and hitting #1 on the Global Viral 50 Spotify chart. Calpurnia went on to release their second single "Louie" which is steadily climbing and shows the band's ability to write infectious guitar driven indie rock. Calpurnia have also announced tour dates in Atlanta, LA and more, a full rundown can be found below.

Scout is everything you'd want it to be, 6 infectious guitar driven tracks, influenced by everyone from Mac DeMarco to the Rolling Stones. The band - which in addition to Wolfhard includes lead guitarist Ayla Tesler-Mabe, a six-string prodigy whose bedroom-shredding viral videos have earned her legions of fans on social media, bassist Jack Anderson and drummer Malcolm Craig - all grew up within walking distance of one another.

The band spent 10 days in Chicago last November recording their debut EP with Twin Peaks' frontman Cadien Lake James serving as executive producer, Calpurnia are primed to let others in on their inimitable union. "It's like a four-way Venn diagram," Anderson says of the band's coalescing musical tastes that seamlessly come together on their six-song debut, a giddy rock riot that sits comfortably at the intersection of classic rock, punk and angsty blues. "We all have our own sounds and our own influences," Tesler-Mabe offers, "but somehow when we all come together all our different sounds and styles amalgamate to create something new. It just works."

Upcoming Tour Dates:
5/20/18 - Terminal West - Atlanta, GA - SOLD OUT
6/23/18 - Fonda Theatre - Los Angeles, CA - SOLD OUT
8/4/18 - Osheaga Festival - Montreal, QC
9/2/18 - Royal Mountain at Raspberry Farm - Hamilton, ON

Courtney Barnett's Sophomore Album 'Tell Me How You Really Feel' Out Today

COURTNEY BARNETT RELEASES
SOPHOMORE ALBUM
TELL ME HOW YOU REALLY FEEL
ON MOM+POP MUSIC

ON U.S. TOUR NOW!

"A masterpiece of an album" - Rolling Stone

"She has sharply altered her tactics to live up to the title of her third solo studio album, “Tell Me How You Really Feel.” In her new songs, she sets aside her sly character studies and minutely observed details for direct declarations and confrontations. They’re underlined by music that expands on all of her guitar-band idioms: growing punkier, more psychedelic, dronier and noisier as the songs demand." The New York Times

"Courtney Barnett Is The New Tom Petty" - Uproxx

"Savagely clever" Pitchfork

"Courtney Barnett is still one of the cleverest rock writers around" - The FADER

Today marks the release of the highly anticipated album, Tell Me How You Really Feefrom Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Courtney Barnett

Over the course of just a few years Barnett has become internationally renowned for her distinctive and acclaimed musical lexicon. Her debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit saw her top year-end lists and sell out shows to adoring audiences on five continents. She played the most iconic and revered festival stages, won the Australian Music Prize, J Award for Album Of the Year, APRA’s Songwriter Of the Year and four ARIA Awards. The album was even nominated for a Grammy and a BRIT Award. In the meantime she’s worked on music with the likes of Jack White, The Breeders and Jen Cloher as well as releasing last year’s masterful collaboration album with US songwriter Kurt Vile, Lotta Sea LiceEven her label Milk! Records is revered worldwide.

So… how do you follow all that up?

In Tell Me How You Really Feel, Barnett has revealed an exhilarating shift and a bold step forward. From its title to the striking cover image – a blood-red tinted self-portrait in uncomfortably tight close up – Barnett reveals a new-found confidence and perspective. Whereas once she examined the world through the prism of self-analysis, Tell Me How You Really Feel shifts that focus to those she interacts with – the good ones, the bad ones, the loved ones. Those she knows intimately and those who are strangers.

There’s a muscularity to the instrumentation, a tenderness in her voice and a boldness to the lyrics. It speaks to Barnett entering a remarkable new phase of her musical evolution.Take storming first single "Nameless Faceless" for instance, a punk rock anthem simmering with barely contained anger at women’s continued dehumanization at the hands of a male dominant society and her own treatment at the hands of anonymous trolls. Similarly, the brutal "I’m Not Your Mother, I’m Not Your Bitch," where Barnett barks “Sit down and shut up/ it’s all the same/ you never change” and later, “I can only put up with so much shit” is the most eviscerating two minutes of her oeuvre to date.

Which is not to say that there aren’t moments of grace and introspection – on "Crippling Self Doubt and A General Lack of Self Confidence" she grapples with the responsibility of being an unexpected spokesperson of her generation, one whose every word is open to scrutiny and examination, somehow turning the chorus of “I don’t know/ I don’t know/ I don’t know anything” into something both humorous and peculiarly affecting. And on the gorgeous album closer 'Sunday Roast', she sings with great tenderness about the weekly meal she and her friends cook for each other in Melbourne. It is a stirring track – gentle and warm, filled with the sense that over the course of this record, we have moved from hopelessness to something quietly, softly optimistic. “Keep on keeping on, you know you’re not alone”, runs the refrain.

After gracing the covers of Under The RadarFLOOD and Performer Magazine, last night Barnett performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for a remarkable fourth time and she’s currently in the middle of a series of sold out USA and European album-launch shows. Full tour dates and ticketing below.
